Firefox OS out in Germany

Ubuntu, I believe already, has released, or will soon, a phone OS. It looked nice. It's their reason for Unity.
-
@ajstringham I doubt it is their reason for Unity. Unity was so long ago and the Ubuntu phone isn't out yet. If it was the purpose behind Unity I would have expected their phone OS five years ago or more.

Unity is probably no more than 3-4 years old. They originally made it to move to a unified platform but it's been a slow process as they don't have the resources MS does, etc.
-
@scottalanmiller I heard about a unified Ubuntu platform originally back in 2007 or 2008. That's when they first started circulating the notion that they wanted to do that. Shortly after, Unity was released and was said to be the platform of Ubuntu's future. It had about the same reaction from most as Windows 8 did.

You are correct. unity is just over four now. It's younger than I was thinking.

Yup. I remember because after it came out, it was the final nail in the coffin for me to move to exclusively running Windows. That happened about the time I graduated high school in 2010. Around then, so yup.

FireFox OS release today in the US I think.

Well, the Ubuntu Edge failed before it even started. They never got enough money to make there phone. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/08/ubuntu-edge-is-dead-long-live-ubuntu-phones/
At least it wasn't as bad as of a fail as the HP smartpad: http://www.pcworld.com/article/238482/death_of_hp_touchpad_changes_the_tablet_landscape.html

Getting into phones sounds cool but that market is effectively buttoned up at this point. Even MS can't make inroads.
