Comparing Ubiquiti EdgeRouter and Cisco ASA PPS Performance and Cost
-
Ubiquiti used to make this comparison easier to find, but without knowing where the original quote is, here is the math.
EdgeRouter Lite, Router performance of 1m PPS
Cisco ASA 5515-x, Router performance of .5m PPSEdgeRouter Lite cost ~$95 on Amazon
Cisco ASA 5515-X cost ~$3,573 on CDWThe ASA has additional costs as well for continued updates, the ERL includes updates to the end of the device lifetime. So the cost of the Cisco is misleadingly low.
This is only one metric, but is the major one for this type of device. Also important to note is that the ERL comes with unlimited licenses for multiple VPN connection types while the ASA requires additional licenses for fewer VPN options at additional cost. So depending on the use case may cost more again.
Stateful throughput of both systems is roughly 1.2 Gb/s, so that metric makes them head to head competitors in that space.
So for firewall functions, directly comparable, and for routing functions, the Ubiquiti is rated at double the Cisco. So the general estimates of $3K as a comparable price point on Cisco ASA to Ubiquiti EdgeRouter would appear to have been overly conservative.

For those interested in the new ISR line from Cisco, the closest match is the CISCO ISR4451-X with a starting price tag around $7,800 and fewer published numbers. Needless to say, it's not price competitive based on the spec sheet.
-
Comparing to Meraki is difficult, even though it is more of a direct competitor than most Cisco product lines, but even at $32,000 Meraki doesn't quite keep up with the ERL in basic specs. Meraki publishes very few specs, however, and no PPS for routing performance so we do not know all of the details.

Here is the link for the EdgeRouter-Lite (ERLite‑3). You were referencing the EdgeRouter (ER-8).

Ubiquiti just announced a new Edgerouter with 10gbps ports, 80gbps throughput, and 18 million pps.

It’s the EdgeRouter Infinity...it has a 16 core processor in it.

That's crazy. Any word on pricing?
-
@scottalanmiller haven’t seen pricing yet
-
I can't see it. Only available to beta users still.
-
I bet it will be priced around $1000 USD

That's SO cheap for that!!
-
@scottalanmiller it’s a guess based on a reddit thread I found, They said in beta it was priced at $500 and in the past beta pricing was half of what retail ended up being.
-
Wow! Talk about shaking up the competition.

Well question about this then. Is the EdgeRouter that your talking about here good for a home lab to learn networking fundamentals from?

Yep
Even better, until you get into high end stuff, there is really no excusable reason you should see anything else, because it's just to expensive. -

Yes, very much so. The EdgeRouters are running enterprise networking systems and are deployed themselves by many businesses and work in the same manner as most other enterprise networking gear. If your goal is to learn Cisco networking itself, a UBNT device isn't going to be great for that. If your goal is to learn the technologies and techniques, then it is perfect. UBNT works "like" Cisco IOS and Junos and other players in the space (and is effectively identical to Brocade.)

Ok thanks. My goal is to learn the general side of things until I have a reason to specialize, which i do not at the moment. I am just trying to learn what makes the most sense right now.

An EdgeRouter X or Lite are both under $100 and will both let you learn a lot of stuff. Same OS, the ERL is just a little more business class with a console port. I use the ERL at home.
