Using a VHD over (other Compression type) file for storage.

An interesting topic came up with my brother over the use of an VHD file over any type of compression type file (ZIP, TAR, etc) for storage and organization.

Rather than creating the Compression file which you would have to extract from or add to, you would use Disk Management services to create / mount a VHD file where you would then operate as it if were another hard drive or other storage device.

Are there any complications with doing this? I would not consider using for large files (1-4GB in size) - but maybe there isn't an issue with this either.

I've used VHD's a couple of times to take quick backups of drives that have file paths / names that exceed the limits. Works a treat. Not much fun on the other end to actually manipulate and extract, I considered it the price to pay for a quick hack.

TL;DR I'm not sure I'd do it (or why you are) but it would work just fine.

TL;DR? You reply twice, but didn't read it?
