Doesn't editing PHP files directly get overwritten when themes are updated? I found that the best way to customize or edit themes is to add custom CSS in the appropriate custom CSS location.
YOu are using CSS to detect the PHP and disable it? That would be really complex.
No, it doesn't work that way.
But it's extremely easy and is the best way to do it.

I'm with @Obsolesce on this one. Better to hide elements by adding CSS rules instead of changing the code. That way it will survive updates.
I would if it had an element. It's part of a block that has one, but I don't want to hide the rest.

I guess we'll never know. I don't even see the G+ icon on their preview...
But yeah, if there is no way to target or single out that icon via CSS, and they don't provide a way to hide or show icons in the Theme settings, then you are forced into performing bad practices in editing the php files directly.

Yeah, they have it all in the same element. And if the settings don't present options to show/hide specific social media icons, then you have to do what you have to do.

Yes, if it's like the demo I see the problem. The people who made the template should have added a different id to each social media icon so you could style them independently.
