Very Noisy PS3
-
3 years ago I bought a PS3 on craigslist. About 3 or 4 months later the PS3 started making a really loud fan like noise. Then it would go away for a while and randomly startup. My first thought was overheating, but the PS3 is never hot. 2 Years ago, It started making a loud fan noise constantly and sometimes a really really loud fan noise for a few hours at a time. The noise can be so loud that sometimes you have to really turn the tv volume up. At this point, I expected the PS3 to die any day. 2 years later and its still making constant loud noises. It gets used at least 6 hours a day every day.
Should I replace it or keep riding it out?

If you can tolerate the noise, and it works, keep it. Otherwise, time to replace it.

@IRJ I have this issue with mine as well. Bought it brand new from Amazon several years ago. It will wind up for 10-15 minutes at a time and then go back to normal. I think it may be one of the bearing on the fan going bad and that fan only winds up when it gets too hot in the machine.
Some day I may dig into it and see what is causing it but it hasn't been an issue at this point.

Yeah, I can understand that. Oh well, not much you can do though....

Yeah that is kind of where I am at. I have plenty of other things to do other than disassembling and troubleshooting a working PS3

My guess is that the bearings in the fan are gone. But again, that is just a guess. I don't know how difficult it would be to case it and swap fans, at least as a test. Only other 'moving part' would be they hard drive.

I'd ride it out. I have dismantled my old PS3 (fat) about 5 times and seen the video of the slim and taking it apart is not a big deal. The fan, if I remember is easily disconnected. I'm sure there are off-market replacement parts you can get a new fan.

Yeah, replacing a new fan isn't a big deal - I'd do it just to avoid the noise. Or find someone on craigslist who does it for a reasonable price. Might as well get them to put in a mod chip while you're at it

What mod chip do you use?

I don't use one
