So a friend and I were talking about home stuff as I'm thinking about what I really want in my house. I'm going to have a primary XS host replicating to a secondary host, VoIP phones with video conferencing and everything, security cameras.
Any other ideas you guys have?
Video stuff is always popular for home.

On my roadmap, I also have private cloud storage for pictures, documents, videos, etc.

That reminds me-- I wanted to find some small, low power displays and use stick PC's to turn them into fully networked digital picture frames. I could actually turn that into art....hmm

I've thought about doing that with a laptop since everything is already designed to be compact and energy efficient with an available video out plugin, it shouldn't be difficult to wire up an external display to the size of your choosing. You just have to find a laptop with a busted screen.

Some even have on-board NICs, so you wouldn't even need a large hard drive. Load Linux pointing to an SMB or files of your choice, pointing to a server with a webpage or something, and there you go.

Yeah I could do that too. I think that would limit my screen options a bit though

Depending on the type of laptop you find, you could go with HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA.

I'd be running this off of my server

What about something like this:
There has to be a way to set somethng like this up as purely a monitor (not an actual light switch) that just reports what is on in the house.

@NerdyDad This is way too big but it's an example: http://www.samsung.com/us/business/displays/digital-signage/LH10DBEPEBB/ZA
