The o365 protection has been about as good as the Barracuda filter we had in the past, but easier to manage. I don't think none at all is reasonable anymore.

For years I got basically zero spam. Now it feels like anything will make it through the filter. The stuff I get all day is so insanely obviously spam and I mark the same email a hundred times as spam and the system never learns. I can manually make filter more effective.

We use spamtitan seem to work well so far.

I thought SpamTitan was ok, but Mimecast blows it out of the water. And if for some reason you don't have the e-mail archiving capability in O365, you can get it through Mimecast. Their archive search functionality / legal discovery is very user friendly. Mimecast's filtering was so tight that when we first implemented it back in 2012 / 2013, we had to whitelist a bunch of customer e-mail addresses.

I'm not sure about the encryption / digital signatures piece.

I would recommend using MimeCast or Barracuda, although I have Barracuda Cloud and Spam Filtering box right now. Mimecast though however for our customers works well.

I wonder if Mimecast and Appriver is on SW. Maybe I can get them to tell me why they are better than the other, lol.

AppRiver used to be really big there, but has since either backed off or left. Not sure. Shane ran their marketing there and isn't with the company any longer, so we never hear from them.

The main thing is they need to work with internal s/mime certificates for encryption/digital signatures, and on-prem AD user/password and distribution group synchronization.

I see. I just want to avoid talking to sales people on the phone (at this point) if I can.

I should have tagged @ken when I posted the link. He's been on ML for three years and actively watches the activity.

Mimecast user here. Once we got it set up we haven't had any issues and we can go back so far about 6 year in our archives. Support is generally good and usually answers questions on the first call or email. My contact over there is very Sales oriented unfortunately always trying to get us to buy add-ons for the product.

Thanks Scott for the nod. The Gartner peer reviews is a tough and well moderated reviews site which asks companies on each service how they perform in different areas. https://www.gartner.com/reviews/market/secure-email-gateways .
I'd recommend picking a couple of services and contacting them for a trial. As you already have your list of requirements it shouldn't take long to narrow down who is relevant to you.
