Where Does the Ubuntu Desktop Go From Here?

Now that the Unity desktop is being phased out and Gnome 3 is the new official desktop of the Ubuntu platform, where will the future of Ubuntu be heading?

Hopefully they bring in the work Ubuntu Gnome has done. It would seem pointless to start from scratch when someone else has done all of the work so far.

I do not believe Ubuntu will go anywhere. It has a strong community behind it. Will things change sure, I do not believe Ubuntu will disappear.
