DNS Hosting - Advantages/disadvantages

Couldn't agree more. Absolutely no reason whatsoever to host your own.

We use CloudFlare and love them. They have been great.

Google is really good. Comodo has a free option. I think OpenDNS does as well (or they used to).

Never used CloudFlare, but have heard great things. I've personally used OpenDNS before. They were pretty decent a few years ago. I see Azure has a DNS service now also. Still looks like it's beta though.

I didn't even know that OpenDNS had offered that service. They are Cisco now so never even pay attention to them any more.

DNSMadeEasy is a great service for low cost DNS load balancing and failover if you need to go beyond basic free DNS.

@JaredBusch I'll have to check those guys out.
Most of the time, I've just used the DNS on my registrar, and I remember probably 2 times in my life where they had issues. But it's very basic of course. No DDoS protection, no failovers, etc.

Most people only need the basics that you can get form CloudFlare for free.

Single point of failure is my favorite feature in a public DNS server. wait....
