Odd question, and I really don't know what is considered "normal" but how long do you keep or use a reference for?

I'm not a resume writer, nor do I play one on TV, but it seems very matter of fact. A resume and cover letter is your first, and potentially only place to sell yourself to potential employers. You can do some of that in the latter, but if the former is bland you may never get to the eyes that can see the effort and knowledge behind your bullet points.

Your resume is just a statement of what you've done. This is great from an IT perspective. I can parse what this means for your skillset and knowledge. If I did not have an IT background it would be a bunch of words that add up to nothing understandable. Imo you need to have both. How did the things you have done affect the business and improve the better, faster, cheaper mantra?
For example your first line:
- Implemented virtualization processes and procedures using XenServer, including architecture design and implementation of a HA Xen Pool which replaced several discrete standalone server systems.
Could read like this:
- Implemented XenServer using best practice architecture and HA; reducing risk, improving uptimes, and reducing costs by 40%.

Well I feel like i might be lying if I said 40% (but only because I have no numbers to measure against) vs what was already in place.
Does that make sense?

I just pulled the number out of the air. If you can't assign a number to it, find another metric. How many servers did you eliminate. Make that a %.

Well I've eliminated 7 servers, down to 2 servers in a HA pool...
And in the process of doing that I've consolidated all of the network shares dispersed across those 7 servers into a single VM.
Making backup via Shadow Protect and XO far more straight forward..
