I wish that we could still get BeOS running 🙂

Anyone have any suggestions for cool OSes to be testing out? Desktop, server or otherwise?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku_(operating_system) ? And sure, I know one or two 😉

I've thought about Haiku. I've never installed it, though.

Neither did I. Same for ReactOS, seems to be great, but never tried it.

Question is... Have you worked with BSD yet? Great OS. Gentoo is something I love when it comes to Linux, there's always something to learn.

I've only ever found one OS that I just didn't like, OpenVMS. I couldn't wrap my head around everything being a program rather than the everything is a file thing at the time. I'm actually sad Digital Equipment Corp isn't around anymore, they made good stuff, even if I never understood the OS.

Yup, of course. FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Dragonfly are all up and running.

I like OpenVMS, haven't worked on it for years. Really wish that it was open source and available for AMD64. Sadly, it is all but lost to the world now.

Yeah. If I would have had time to learn it rather than being lambasted because I didn't already know it, my memories of it would probably be a lot better.

It was heavily in use by the local university in the early 1990s here in Western NY. And my dad had used VMS (before it was OpenVMS) a lot at Eastman Kodak on the PDP machines so I was familiar with it to some degree because of that going way back to the VAX era.

And I've even supported it once or twice on VAX in my day!!

My first IT job we had an old mini VAX sitting in the server room. I forget what in the world it did, but the only time it stopped was when the switched over to a single UPS for then entire server room.

I was just talking to someone about OpenVMS the other day. It was the standard for SUNY systems way back when.

Yup. SUNY Geneseo is where I saw it back then.

That slowed education for IT for NY for a long time as students in the SUNY system were not getting UNIX exposure.
