Pretty cool...every time I see stuff about 3d printing I am reminded of Cory Doctorow's book, Makers.

I'm trying to see how this could ever be anything more than a novelty, first-run product. Then again, I buy makeup once a year, and not because I've used it up, but because you're supposed to replace it for health reasons, so this is clearly not marketed to me. I don't think I've spent $300 on makeup, total in my lifetime.

What I can't figure out is what makes this a printer or 3D. Maybe I'm missing something but this looks like a chemical mixer pouring into a mold. As far as I can tell, it's not doing printing in 2D or in 3D. Printers aren't things that mix colors or chemicals. Some do as an extra feature, but that is not what makes them a printer. And rarely do they do that. Inkjets do not, lasers do not. Not sure any printer that does that.
Not that this isn't a neat idea and with a lot of potentials in other areas. But if this was a real 3D printer, it could make the compact to put the makeup into. Rather, this appears to just mix some colours that are already in it and then you put it into the plastic container that was made in the factory for you. No 3D and no printing.
I fear that "3D printing" is the new "cloud." Enough people know the words now that people will apply it to anything and hope that no one questions it and, of course, few people do.

I'm going to start calling the guys who mix paints at Home Depot the "3D paint printers" because, apparently, mixing colours is now called 3D printing.

To me, it sounded more like the printer was using inkjet tech to color the base pellets used for the 3D printing before being printed out.

Could be. Although if the heads don't move and "print" it's just a chemical mixer. You can have a black and white printer, in fact they started off that way. Color does not define a printer. But making designs does. A printer creates designs.... pouring ink from one bucket into another is not printing.
