Can old laptop be used with 4K display?
-
May be using an HDMI adaptor or something?
-
Sure, why not. Analog can push 4K no problem. To be 100% certain check what video card is in it.
-
how old the laptop doesn't matter too much, it's the video card that will be the factor.

Its a Sony vaio VPCEA36FG
Is there an HDMI adaptor or just the normal adaptor works? Not sure if the monitor has VGA, its for my friend. Need to get detail about the monitor as well.

I am not aware of any 4K monitor that would have analogue input. They might, but even 1080p is nearly impossible to find support for in analogue.

What is it that he actually wants to accomplish? What is the end goal here?

It sounds like a Black Friday deal for a 4K TV, but he doesn't own an 4K capable device.
So salvage the purchase without having to spend more. would be my guess.

Amazon makes 4K native devices for $75. So we should set some bounds on the project value if watching 4K television is the only goal.

Actually he bought a monitor and now since the resolution of the laptop doesnt support the 4K the icons and overall display is funny!

My el-cheapo chinese knock off does have DVI, but you're right not VGA.

VGA just can't scale up to that. You need a digital output.
