    • RE: I think I am missing something about Hyper-V....?

      @irj I find that to be an odd claim. Azure Stack is based on Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) and that's Hyper-V.

      Nothing in Azure/O365 is the same as what we work with outside of their DCs. Nothing.

      Nano gives us a bit of a glimpse into what is being done there. Calling what Nano does, and Windows Defender Application Guard which is the virtual isolation of Edge, Hyper-V is a bit of a stretch.

      The hypervisor is just that. A layer between the guests and the hosts whatever it's named.

      @irj said in I think I am missing something about Hyper-V....?:

      I find it funny that Microsoft doesn't use their own virtualization for Azure.

      Proof?

    • RE: Hyper-V Server 2016 guest licensing question

      @jaredbusch Please read Eric Siron's excellent post here.

      In the Microsoft world licensing is always tied to the host not the guest.

      The guests on an OEM licensed host can be moved to another host whether it's licensed OEM, VL, or Retail so long as the destination host is licensed to receive those guests.

      The OEM OS installed on the host itself is bound to that host. That license and its associated COA cannot be transferred anywhere else. That is a completely separate clause in licensing rights to VM portability.

    • RE: Hyper-V Server 2016 guest licensing question

      Licensing is always tied to the host no matter the license type.

      So long as the host is properly licensed for the guests running on top of it you are good to go.

      OEM = N-1 so 2016 and 2012 R2 would be appropriately licensed.

      Standard allows for two guests per license while Datacenter is unlimited guests per license.

      A Windows Server license includes 16 cores per box. Have more cores? Then purchase 2-Core Packs to bring the licensed core count up to parity with the box the OS will be running on.

      All guests are portable no matter the underlying OS license type (Retail/OEM/VL/SPLA). Eric Siron has a good explanation on the TechNet forums about how this one works.

    • RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!

      @scottalanmiller Hello everyone.

      I was invited to this forum while at MVP Summit in Seattle this last March so here I am.

      My wife and I co-own MPECS Inc. and have been in business since 2003. I started out on BackOffice Server on NT 4/4.5 with a focus on what became Small Business Server with a focus on Proxy/Internet Security and Acceleration Server.

      2006/7 brought Longhorn to the for with our company focus having already started to move into Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005+.

      I built my first Hyper-V cluster on Intel's Modular Server (we were the first to do so anywhere) after spending about 6-9 months working with Intel and Microsoft (Ben Armstrong & Jose Barreto being key folks that helped).

      2012 RTM brought Storage Spaces into the picture with our first SOFS/Hyper-V hosting cluster going out the door not too long after that (2x SOFS and 2x Hyper-V with dual 10GbE switch fabric).

      Today we are focused on providing high availability solutions for businesses as small as 5-10 seats (Storage Spaces Direct) all the way up to high VM density hosting providers (S2D or Converged).

      I'm fortunate. I love what I do and occasionally get paid to do it. 🙂

      @nerdydad That's not for the user. That's for the admin who then delivers that via whatever management solution they use.

      Quick Access/Favorites can be Group Policy managed so all or some domain members can get it easily.

      For external users it's a two step process to send them a shortcut and they know how to log on from there.

    • RE: Hyper-V Manager Sometimes Disconnects from Failed RPC Calls

      Do the hosts have their firewall enabled with logging enabled (should be)? If yes, check the log for dropped packets.

      Are DNS 0/1 on the pNIC of the host set up correctly? Is there a missing DNS server there?

      Is DNS sync'd correctly between DNS servers?

      Anything in the source or destination Event Logs?

    • RE: How do you have your disks & folders set up on a virtual Exchange 2016 install?

      In a virtualized setting there's no real reason to configure more than one location for the Exchange databases and logs. Unless, there's a separate high IOPS location that the logs would be stored on?

      @jt1001001 Why thankfully going away?

      @fiyafly I've started JBP's 12 Rules. The intro was so in-depth that I'm still ruminating on it. 😉

      He's an accomplished professional and his work shows it.

      We watched John Carter a few weeks back. It's a movie that I really like.

      My daughter filled me in on Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of the books, and some of the story line.

      So, I bought the books on Kindle and am reading via my Surface 3.

      I just finished book 3 last night.

      ERB's style takes a bit getting used to but I really enjoy it. It's science fiction before Heinlein and Asimov took it mainstream IMO.

      I make a point of reading for at least half an hour to an hour to get immersed in what I'm reading.

      Our standard VM layout is:

      😄 @ 95GB Fixed VHDX
      K: @ 250GB+ Dynamic VHDX

      OS goes into 😄 while Exchange goes into an identical directory structure on K:.

      Our primary mail services for clients is on-premises Exchange 2013 and 2016.

      ODfB is SharePoint.

      In Win10 make sure the Web Client service is enabled and running.

      Open the SharePoint site in Internet Explorer. Browse to a library folder. Under the Library "tab" Open With Windows Explorer".

      Authenticate if prompted with O365 credentials.

      Once complete, in File Explorer click and hold the folder icon at the head of the address bar and pull it down to Quick Access/Favourites.

      Once the shortcut is there, right click on it and Properties.

      That's the WebDAV URI/URL to use for whatever script or even persistent drive mapping needed.
