    • RE: Does Amazon use Xen or XenServer

This is plain Xen + their own home-made "secret" toolstack (built year after year).

They also implement features on their side, sometimes valuable stuff, sadly it seems there is a lack of sharing. And because Xen is GPL and not aGPL, they are not forced to give it back.

Sometimes, you see Xen people developing a feature which is already working in Amazon. That's a bit sad when you have to do things twice, but you know, big corps...

    • RE: THANKS TO YOU: Nextcloud 9 is here - and all open source, now and in the future!

@jospoortvliet nice to see we are (as Xen Orchestra editor) not the only one believing in a fully Open Source model. The value is not code, the value is in community and services around the software.

      Nice job!

Assisted search filters for pools/hosts/tags are now working. Now on adding a switch on the home view to have also hosts.

@BRRABill said in BRRABill's Field Report With XenServer:

it'll tell you you need a reboot.

It won't tell you anything, it will display the recommendation for each patch.

    • RE: BRRABill's Field Report With XenServer

      Hi there!

Let me recap the thing and put it in perspective.

The couple XenServer/XenCenter is targeting mainly Windows admins (thus the Windows client, the SP1 and so forth patching etc). You know, things that seems a bit strange inside the Linux world. It was really something wanted from Citrix to not "scare" their Windows public (have you ever seen the word "Linux" somewhere on XenServer/XenCenter?).

In this fabulous Windows world, you have to reboot very often for a lot of reasons.

Now, let's get to the point: XenServer updates are a kind of ugly tarball containing RPM packages (+ scripts) which are extracted on the host. In the patch metadata, there is a "recommendation" field, which gives you what to do after applying a patch. Roughly:

      • if it's a lib or updated scripts: no reboot needed at all
      • if it's kernel or hypervisor related: it will be used only after a reboot

But in all cases, there is no problem to install all patches at once, and do a reboot at the end. The missing info in XO is to display the recommandation field, which is now the case in the 5.0 interface.

So why on earth XenCenter will reboot your host 15 times? Even sometimes without asking you? I think that's really a bad behavior. It's up to you to decide.

    • RE: Xen Orchestra new design

Added some stuff this week, should feel a bit more complete on feature side.

      Next week will be about:

      • finishing the home view (pool/host search, switching to host mode)
      • finishing the VM creation feature (with extra stuff)
      • validating/replugin ACLs
      • initial work on advanced stats view (heatmap/compare graphs)
      • VDI attach/add on VM view, with grab reordering
      • using pagination/filter for all tables

So enough to release a beta, let's say, Friday (17th).

    • RE: Xen Orchestra on Ubuntu 15.10 - Complete installation instructions

@BRRABill There is no "official" support anywhere else XOA. We don't have the resources to validate multiple distros. But because Xen Orchestra use a very small number of system dependencies, it should work everywhere. I just cannot guarantee this.

@BRRABill We just finished the new VM import stuff, which get:

      • multiple XVA support
      • pool/SR select
      • drag and drop

We'll also include a progress bar for each file I think (sooner or later)

    • RE: What Do You Use? - Send/Receive Large Files, Securely

For a direct send of large files, without anything to install anywhere, https://instant.io/ is really cool 🙂

In a more corporate env and keeping files after (shares etc.), owncloud/its new fork.

@aaronstuder We had checked multiples interfaces yes.

And yes, the new one will be also responsive (it's mainly already the case in the current state of 5.0)

What I said is to hear precise reasons: eg "too many clicks to do this or that."

Everyone has various tastes, personal opinions are less interesting than facts 🙂

@Danp Constructive mean it brings something (ideas/bugs) we don't get before ^^ If we go public beta now, we'll have hundreds of reports about missing views/known non-finished things. That's all I would say by "constructive" 🙂

@BRRABill Good catch 😉 Yes and I saw the last episode Monday, thus why I used this expression 😄

Anyway, it was mainly a tech rework (ditched Angular 1 for ReactJS/Redux/ReactSelect). Some base components start to be shipped, so the UI will evolve more quickly now!

Guys, it's not even beta ready 😄

Could you wait a bit? Issues like non-existing page and broken filters are perfectly normal at this stage. Also a lot of WIP 😄

Also the home view will have a switch to VM/host/pool view 🙂

edit: let's say Friday it will be more complete 🙂

@xogurunoob I like constructive feedback: what do you mean by that?

Are you sure you need to go to some tabs each time you see a VM? I mean the "General" thing should be enough in 80% of the time.

Also, it was more a technical from scratch thing for now (as you can see in the recent perf tests here). We also built a lot of internal components, which will help to really modify the interface quickly after.

You can switch on next-release if you want to have it now.

Otherwise, the next stable will be in 1 week or so.
