back in the office after a week off, been catching up on things all morning, and now I'm back on the desk ready to talk to users.
Yey.

Our doctor's office just emailed us to tell us that 2+ years of medical records were lost because they weren't testing backups. They kept getting a "your backup was successful" message, but no one looked to see if that was true.
So not only did they totally lose their medical records system (um, really?) but they don't have working backups.
I'll hold my hands up on this too, we are terrible and testing.
But that's about to change as i'm reviewing our entire backup and testing procedures over the next month or two.
We check all customers backups every week, and the majority get a test restore done at least once a month too, just to be on the safe side - so might be worth doing test restores as well - no good making sure the backup works if you're unable to restore the data if it does die!

If by checking you mean looking at the logs.... That's not really checking. A restore is the only real check. Of course having logs that day the backups were successful is a good first step.
Full logs checked every week, and any warnings/errors raised to be fixed
Checking means actually doing a restore. The doctors office that just lost everything has clear logs, too.
Fair enough, that's once a month then!

Played a lot of For Honor yesterday. Really fun game. Open beta right now.
It looks good, but not my style of game!
Looking forward to the Ghost Recon: Wildlands Open Beta that starts tomorrow - and finally moving over to Intel tomorrow - Getting a 6700K processor and an ASUS Maximus Hero VIII motherboard and 16GB Hyper X DDR4 RAM! Should be a bit of an improvement to my Phenom II X6 and 12GB RAM!

ASUS Maximus Hero VIII
You'll see a huge performance boost, but why are you buying such a mainboard? Lots of features you'll never use, see or feel but pay for. A $120 Z170/Z270 Asrock / Gigabyte / MSI or even Asus board would serve you as well if not better.
Better put the money in a M.2 SSD.
Getting it as a bundle through a friend who gets a discount - The CPU is £340 and I'm getting the bundle for £480, so £140 for the Mobo in effect!
M.2 is next on the list!!

So if you leave a coffee pot on the stove and forget about it for a long time, the coffee boils off and the plastic parts of the pot melt off.
Do we need to ask you how you know this?
I think we need picture evidence...
Had a client with a powercut at their main site which had taken all servers offline, 5:40am call for me about that, but they're back up and running now!

I really dislike sales people...
Them: I'm giving you the best deal I can
Me: Ok then we're going with this other solution that does the exact same thing for 1/3 the price
Them: Well let me see what I can do15 Minutes later
Them: Ok here is the new price, you'll find it matches the competition's price exactly.
Me: Why didn't you give me this price to begin with?
After having worked with several sales people, I hate them too.

Good morning everyone.
Morning!
Looks like it was a busy evening. More back posts to go through than when I normally first wake up.
I'm busy trying to get a customer to send me the correct email - it's causing a bounceback from the internal spam filter, so I asked for a copy of the email that they were trying to send that was causing the bouncebacks....so she sent me 5 bouncebacks for the same email....but not the original email as I'd asked for...

It also is called quartet but is a trio.
Yeah, 3 electric guitars and one drummer, so both could be right, 4 people, 3 guitars...
But it's only two guitars.
Are you forgetting about John Patitucci himself?

You must be on Pinterest because I just saw that same thing.
That's a nightmare.
Pinterest or the zip ties?
Both?
Seconded.
Velcro strips are so much better, been cut far too many times by badly snipped zip ties while doing cable runs...
Working from home today, had an operation yesterday so I'm sore!!

Hope that all went well.
yeah was all good thanks, fairly routine thing, in and out within the same day
First day back in the office since the op, drive in wasn't too bad, and managed to fix several issues, and identified why one customers backups seem to be failing at the same time every morning ("What time do you switch the backup drives around?" "About 5:45am" "That's why the backups are failing then....")
Overwatch is free this weekend, just a heads up!
