@thwr said in MS SQL export / import:

Just create a normal backup (Task -> Backup). Setup the new SQL Server Express, create a new database and restore the backup. Job done. Make sure you install the new SQL Server with mixed mode authentication if you want to use non-Windows users to connect to the DB

OK, that's what I was trying to do. It looks like in SQL 2016 you have to select "Enable server proxy account" in order to enable SQL server mode auth. Does that account have to get created somewhere else before you can use it, or by putting in what you want to use are you creating it there?

It is Express. Couldn't do a simple export to the new server. It wouldn't connect. New machine is not domain joined and couldn't connect with Windows creds. My thought was to backup the database on the old box, copy the backup file to the new box and then restore it. It seemed to need a database target to restore to, so I tried to create one. That failed and I noticed that the connection type was Windows auth, and the old database was using SQL Server mode with the SA account.

Couldn't switch the new database to SA authentication.

I could be going about this totally wrong.

Is this full blown SQL Server? or is this SQL Serve Express?

Fairly certain it's express, but I'll double check before getting started.

I have a client with a MSSQL 2012 database on Windows 7 that they want to move to MSSQL 2016 on Windows 10. (It's used by one user.) Should this be as straight forward as exporting up the database using the SQL Server Management Studio and then importing it?

@Dashrender said in MangoCon 2017 Topic Ideas:

So the next question is - how do you decide what classes to put on? What if I want to attend both a class and the panel someone puts on at the same time?

I think after the initial survey of what courses, we should do a survey of registered attendees to see if the courses line up and if there is a track they would want to follow.

@JaredBusch I think your presentation was about right. For those of us who had never set one up, we got a good idea of what was involved and you showed some of the caveats so we could see why we wouldn't want to bring in someone with experience for a production system.

I think answering a couple of questions would help us decide what we should do for next year. How many more people would have attended if there would have been a training track outline that they could have taken to their boss to get approval for the conference? Where did this years attendees feel they got the most value out of the conference?

Personally, if I had been at my corporate job, I would have had to show a session track to get approval. Myself seeing the @JaredBusch PBX demo answered a lot of questions for me because I have never touched one. The AetherStore/Ware demo was cool too.

Maybe some round tables on topics like best and worst practices that we could go back and turn in to documentation or videos for the rest of the community.

@JaredBusch That's harsh. We'll have to add a step before updating firmware on stuff. Check the news... 🙂

Almost every time I'm helping someone with an exchange issue on Spiceworks, they chime in with their spam. No information about how it does it different or what it does that the free Microsoft tools don't do, just spam. A couple of times I have ask them for more information about how their product will help the OP and they never reply.

    • RE: Consult or work for an established company?

The way you worded your question it's almost as if you think that if you have your own company you won't have regular pay. As @JaredBusch said if you form a company and write yourself a paycheck every week, you do have regular pay.

Once you have a certain number of customers, you actually have more job security than with a single employer. If you lose one customer, you may lose 10% of your salary, but not everything.

    • RE: HP Elite x2 - HP's Microsoft Surface killer

I used one. It felt heavy. OTOH it's MIL-STD spec. I watched a guy pour water on his and plug it back in to the projector and go on with his presentation. It's also "field serviceable". This doesn't mean that you can service it in the field, but HP can. You need a jig that has magnets in the right places to release it. The advantage is that if a SSD goes, it can be replaced without having to ship the whole thing back. If you have security concerns, you can buy a new SSD and shred the old one and not be out the cost of the entire unit like you would be with an iPad.

    • RE: MS OFFICE GPO issue:Outlook (various version) GPO Win7-10 not applying to all machines.

The first thing I check with something like that is make sure all your domain controllers are syncing the sysvol. If not the computers that hit one DC will get the updated GPO and the ones that hit a stale DC may not get the policy.

If you have Azure AD Connect in place, when you log in to o365 it will tell you "Synced with Active Directory" in the Sync column of your User list.
