I disagree on the idea that magement shouldn't understand IT. We shouldn't expect them to have a Ph.D. in IT and all the various flavors but they should be able to comprehend what's going on at a basic level.

Is there a way to move vm's from VMware ESXI 5.5 to usb directly from host?
Looking to see if there is a faster way to transfer my vm's off the host, preferably with my USB 3.0 drives... any help/suggestions?

Hey good morning SAM. I'm trying to finish up migrating from VMWare completely. I have a 2 Node (about to be 3) using XenServer.
My last few VM's on VMWare need to migrated off so I can wipe that server and make it a new XS host.
I have usb 3 drives and a usb 3 card in the server I'm hoping that's faster than the 1-2 hour backup with Veeam.

RE: XenServer Host to Host Migration Questions
@JaredBusch I may redo my post so I can provide additional detail to avoid the scrolling to get caught up.
My VMWare ESXi is live its 5.5. My XenServer is live its 7.0 But there are 0 of the machines from my VMWare coming over for longer term purposes. They are just windows 2008 servers and being decommissioned. I technically only have one server that I care about and thats my security system / access badge server but since my vendor finally (after a lonnnnnng call) gave me the software, I can install it , and install my backups to get my system going on my new hypervisor.
My new environment is going to be Windows 2012 R2 Data Center but push comes to shove I can buy an additional license because this existing server is basically End of Warranty. I'll keep adding parts as necessary but its there basically to be backup should I need one and also a test server. I plan on buying either a used server (thanks Slava) or getting a new server. I'm leaning toward used.

Ok that makes more sense sorry. I'm still novice on Linux. But that is definitely a better option. I assume I can also do that from XenServer, I've played with the CLI a little in it more so than VMWare ESXi.
Thanks guys you just saved me like 8 hours or more
Last but not least Scott, thanks for all your help for helping me get into Virtualization and mentoring me on the path! We finally have our office modernized and I can't help but to thank you and everyone at NTG!
2 newer dell servers and will repurpose the existing dell server we had for a small 3 node cluster running XenServer 7.1 and using XoA I'm probably going to need more help on XoA but I have it in a test network at home. I like VMWare ESXi but I'm putting that to the pasture XS for me

I would not connect to the DB via a VPN, I have seen to many VPN connects fluctuate and destroy data. A better solution would be to keep it in house by using a Terminal Server and publishing it. That way, should he be disconnected, it doesn't thrash the DB.
Honestly that was my premise on moving to Enterprise 2015, but considering online seems to be better suited for the world now since it integrates better with apps, I'm considering the move.

QB over straight VPN doesn't perform well. You'll want a remote viewer system to make it comfortable to use.
Let's be honest here, Quickbooks doesn't perform well ever. Over a VPN, just forgetaboutit. How and what they actually do with company files is nothing short of crazy (you'd be transferring the entire company file over the VPN multiple times while opening/working/closing the thing.)
[Exactly]
I've tried every form of VPN known to man and told Quickbooks support it doesn't make sense the way they built the app for it to be so critical and yet be so frail. -

I normally wouldn't care about the machine and just take the data off and reinstall a vm/app and pull over the data but for some of the machines that wasn't worth the hassle just yet.

RE: Cross Posting - XenServer 7.0 improper HDD add/removal
I would actually prefer to run XenServer from a USB (if there is a guide please point me to it graciously). I used SAM's guide for the install originally and I recall since I'm getting my feet wet, to not use the USB initially. I have experience with Hyper-V and VMWare ESXi both being ran from USB successfully. I realize that moving to XenServer USB might be a tad bit harder.

RE: How to recover system image from Windows 7 using the backup & restore app
After we looked into it futher I'm still not sure why it is acting retarded. We were able to mount it to a vm and I was able to see the data but I didn't see the app installed (that was also backed up) that I was needing desperately.

Like I see everything but my folder for the app!

Success I got it working

RE: How to recover system image from Windows 7 using the backup & restore app
its syncing back with my sensors! With that said I CAN"T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR YOU HELP! But I can thank you with beer @ Spiceworld if I can make it this year!!!!
I'm letting the database rebuild now about 1-2 months of data and I'm back in business.
I have no friggin clue why we couldn't see the data yesterday. Just for shits and giggles, I created another VM, used the windows 7 iso and booted, and did the repair option and I pointed to the back up, it still won't let me load it. I have no clue why.
But none the less, I am able to attach the VHD from the windows backup, and see my actual system image and pull my individual files from my database.
My app is a security system

RE: HPE Engineers still suggesting RAID5 for deployments
SAM yea its just for servers not necessarily external storage. We just plan on using Windows Multipoint Server is small deployments for classrooms which is its best use case. We got on the topic of storage just for the local host, I still plan on having a local NAS and then site to site back up via rsync.
Of course he got on the topic of external storage and I immediately let em know I got a synology nas with raid 10 works fine I leave it alone lol

RE: HPE Engineers still suggesting RAID5 for deployments
Oh I forgot to mention this SAM, I told him about you and he wanted me to send him some of your articles and I said I sure GLADLY WILL
He really wants to sell me on buying a dual server setup (which I might) just not because of his reasoning.
I explained that really sticking with a single server and beefing it up and having the things that break on site is really the best cost/case scenario. At that point he brought out the "what if the motherboard breaks" chat and I said in a case like that, thats where the 4 hour or NBD would come into play, but I would still have a good plan in place to limit/mitigate complete failure.
