    • RE: Cellular backup options

We use the Peplink MAX BR1 Mini LTE | Industrial-Grade 4G LTE Router | MAX-BR1-MINI-LTE-US-T at about 80 customers. We like it. It's easy, it works. Verizon charges anywhere from $10 to $20 per month depending on how you get them to include it.

The hardest part of any failover system (except the integrated solution from Comcast) is the router setup. We use all Sonicwall and it works perfect for FailOVER, but every once in a while it doesn't failBACK.

I even carry one of these with us on vacation when we travel to remote places where cellular IS available but decent copper broadband ISN'T.

This plugs into you network via ethernet, or it can be a WiFi router. (or both!)

However I think Comcast uses Verizon under the hood anyway for their cell network. Can anyone confirm that?

Comcast has agreements with all of the cellular networks. Who the underlying carrier is depends on your geo location. This is why they may send you a new sim card if you move to a new area that is serviced by another carrier.

    • RE: Google Calendar <-> MS Outlook (Stand Alone) Sync?

After much research and testing. I chose: gSyncit v5 https://www.fieldstonsoftware.com/software/gsyncit5

So far I am happy with it. It certainly resolved the sync issues I started having with Companionlink that they could not sort out.
It was the only reason I went looking for another option.

It's too bad they couldn't sort it out, I really liked the Calendar widget in their Android DejaOffice product much better than the native calendar widget.

So, our phones and PCs with any combination of Google Calendar (we don't use gmail) and MS Outlook are all in sync now (once again!)

      This talks about

gpmc.msc is the correct tool to use. (gpedit.msc won't display the security/services items)

I'm building GPOs on the server so I have to use gpmc, gpedit will not build gpos.

That article is good, I've been heading down each rabbit hole it reveals, It may be leading me to the solution.

Thank you for the link. I'll report back with the actual link that worked if I am successful.

Server software is free for Vivotek cameras, $35 license fee for other brand cameras. Love them.

    • RE: Taking suggestions about x86 Access replacement

@mr-jones Can you tell us why they need 32 bit? We manage a ton of Access databases that were created and developed under 32 bit MS Access in the year 2003. With very little effort, these are all running just ducky under 64bit Access 2019.

I'm just curious if you may be having a problem that is simple to resolve, but since everyone has always said it has to be 32, the solution hasn't been explored....

No Need for a bunch of Nested IF= statements.

VLOOKUP is made for this. Although XLOOKUP is the new VLookup.

Here's the formula in Column I of my screen shot. Don't worry about the $, they just mean the formula should not auto advance when you copy and paste to other cells.

      =VLOOKUP(H4,$C$21:$D$25,2,FALSE)
The "False" means EXACT Match, please leave it as False.

actually, I read that you just have to Alt F4 the window requesting a MS logon, and it will press on.

Also, with the current Home versions, if you wait until after the username setup to attached to WiFi or plug into ethernet, it lets you create a local account.

Make sure Auditing is turned on for:
Audit Logoff – When a user is logged off.
Audit Logon – When a user authenticates to Windows
Audit Other Logon/Logoff Events – Computer lock, unlocks, RDP connects and disconnects

This auditing needs to be turned on for any solution you choose.

    • SMB Timeout?????

I have an HP T830 plotter that scans and saves to a network share. It will not save a multi-page file if it is more than two pages.

My only hunches are Anti-Virus or SMB Timeout.

Do any of you have any experience with such an issue?

Saving to the USB in the plotter is no problem, sending through e-mail is nor problem. It is only the network share to a Windows 2012 Server share.

    • RE: Exchange Environment - Lab

There's rarely a day that goes by that I don't write a batch script, cmd script or powershell script. All of it is possible from having learned the basic structure of command scripting.

If I have to do anything to more than two computers that can be scripted, I script it.

I would much rather have my techs learn how to install MSExchange with a version that has been around long enough to be able to find the answer to the issue online; than have them spinning their wheels trying to solve a problem caused by a recent windows patch that no one has encountered before.

@irj said in Exchange Environment - Lab:

No that's terrible practice and not a modern or efficient way to do anything. Powershell or Bash (neither of which is new) would actually. Ake sense. If you're using batch in 2021, you might as well use a sun dial or high noon to tell time.

This is like saying you don't need to learn long division because you have a cellphone with a calculator.

You need to know long division.

    • RE: GPO printers missing

We just had a similar issue across several customers. It was a Windows Update issue.

For us, in all cases, there was a window update that needed to run, not normal ones that run unattended, but the "Feature Update Windows 10, version 21H1". Once run, and rebooted, all printers and ports returned.

Some users lost all GPO delivered printers and some users had all of the Ports disappear from the Ports tab in Print Server Properties:

What are your thoughts on Using Zerotier as a VPN to highly secure networks?

How will you be configuring access to the network assets and resources? Devices at the other end of a VPN are only as secure as their environment. Be sure to consider all protections before making your decision.

Sometime HR problems with employees are your biggest security risk. For example, an employee who leave their laptop unattended in a Panera and their password is on a sticky note. Sounds silly, but it happens. When this happens, your very Secure VPN is not so secure! 🙂
