Is anyone using the geo ip module on NGINX? It looks like you can route / filter traffic based on geo location to the appropriate server (if using NGINX as a load balancer).

    • RE: Joining 2 Windows 10 Machines

Dual boot and virtualization seem kinda pointless when you running the exact same OS. It might make sense if you were testing and wanted to blow things up. But that doesn't seem to be the case here

    • RE: Joining 2 Windows 10 Machines

Dual booting is a management nightmare. How often is the secondary OS updated? Who the fuck knows? When the user finally uses the secondary drive, they have to spend 2 hours installing updates.

It makes no sense from a management or productivity standpoint for the user.

    • RE: Routing port 80

This whole idea doesn't make much sense to me. If really "test" why isnt testing internally sufficient? Like seriously what are you testing are you doing that wont work with attaching the instance to a public IP?

It sounds like you are trying to skirt having to pay for additonal IPs or a hosting solution. Hey, I get it. I appreciate a guy trying t o save a buck, but you are creating alot more headache for very little gain. Hosting anything production on your home network woud be pretty silly to save a few pennies. I mean hosted solutions are dirt cheap.

So lets start with this. What are you really trying to accomplish?

OK, maybe I mis-spoke. Nothing community / unsupported.

Oh, that's entirely different. No connection to open source there. Open source has more support, not less.

Community versions of commercial products definitely help find bugs. Support is generally well searchable and many people are knowledgeable about it since it is more widely used than paid versions. Being able to have a community product where you then add support and features to it, is ideal.

Honestly, I have never worked at a single company where IT supports printers, other than initial setups.

Must be fucking nice that the accountants are installing toner and removing paper jams.

Smart accountants know that IT handling printers is a waste of fucking money. Why pay someone $100k+ a year and have them work on printers?

stay with your current job and do some hard work and learn something not Windows thats why your stuck, everything is shifting to Linux or Unix

Play with Suse man, i am loving it right now. If your in US/Canada study RHEL and Centos. I said stay cause you should be master in it, and you can learn another thing without that effecting. and be system admin

Totally disagree with this advice. Staying at your current job is a horrible choice.

Learning linux is nice in theory, but he already runs servers and troubleshoots linux issues. He needs real world experience.

Sure I get that and your right. Its just difficult to pay for licensing for everything sometimes. That is really the only thing that keeps me from learning certain things at home.

90% of all Windows tools have a 180 day eval. I believe that SCCM is one of those tools.

Although it seems like Microsoft is looking to take SCCM out of the picture soon and completely replace the ConfigMgr piece of it with InTune. So Intune may be a better tool to learn going forward.

Yeah pretty much everyone is replacing their management tools with cloud offerings now. You might as well as be in front of the curb vs behind it.

@scottalanmiller So, If my average CPU usage on one of the hosts is over 50% and max is 95% for the past 6 months, I can't use that to say how much more CPU I need if I wanted to double the number of running VMs with similar performance needs?

How can you define similar, though?

A couple years ago we ordered a number of Galaxy Tab 10. They have generally worked.

The current version of them will also likely work well. But they are $250, so it is worth a short amount of time to look for other models.

      protect them from what?

Predatory sales tactics. Microsoft is trying to force more services on them.

      "Force" ?

Uh, no. No one has to open their wallet to anyone.

If there is value in what Microsoft may be advertising or suggesting once the user logs in then all the power to them. The user opens their wallet and voluntarily pays.

OneDrive personal is free and comes with a built-in encrypted vault now. They bumped the default storage up to 100GB or 75GB which is more than enough for folks to back up their critical stuff.

Most folks will pay the $9 or whatever per month for O365 and get that integration too. Then their OneDrive hits 1TB and they get Microsoft Office.

G00g is crap. Plain and simple. No competition with Microsoft Office and O365. None.

We're working with a number of clients that have the full O365 Single Sign-On (SSO) setup in place and it's sweet. Multi Factor Authentication makes it even better with an app instead of a text. They've got a good thing going there.

I agree Office 365 is great, but it's about the only thing.

What we were actually discussing is how bloated windows 10 seems to be. Why can't the default install be the best for performance. You damn well know people don't use half the features on a base install. Yet stupid shit like cortana is slowing down systems.

Home users suffer the most because usually business class PCs are more powerful than your standard home user. Grandma with a celeron and 4gb of ram is a big time loser with all these "extra" features. Hell she even uses bing because she can't figure out how to search otherwise. She sure as hell has no need for extra bullshit

I would be interested to compare a default windows 10 install with Azure's Windows 10 VDI. I wonder how much extra shit is on with standard windows 10 that they wont run on their own hardware 🤔

An often large benefit to going to colo is reducing the need for high cost ISP connections to sites. Because without colo we often have to host services out of end point ISP drops at high cost, but with colo we normally only use low cost consumption bandwidth.

Colo is better than on-prem for sure. There is more expertise required than going with IaaS for basic setups as you must manage a hypervisor. You can introduce elasticity into a colo just like you can with true IaaS but it is more work and obviously is not as fault tolerant as you can spread through AZs or regions quickly and easily with IaaS.

If his needs can be met with PaaS it becomes even more benefecial to go cloud. Like if he wants to run database servers or spin up web servers there is no maintenance that needs to be done.

I need to understand why this happened in order to prevent it from happening in the future. Nothing has turned up any answers.

It's always nice to know root cause, but sometimes it is very difficult to replicate an issue like this.

The simple answer to "why virtualize" is that if you don't, everyone here will make fun of you (ask me how I know).

It is difficult to have a valid reason to run a physical server anymore.
