    • LTO-9 Tape Drives

Noticed that the LTO 9 tapes have just been released (been waiting a while) and I need to purchase some and a stand-alone LTO-9 drive (not a whole library setup or magazine) but not having any luck finding one online to purchase.

i have a small office customer that has a huge amount of data to backup. We currently replicate to a Synology offsite (in the same town) but they want the tape to store out of state.

Has anyone seen any single stand-alone LTO-9 tape drives I can order or anywhere I should be looking?

    • RE: Move VM Back and Froth From Workstation to ESXI

@jaredbusch most is where we use at the customer site and at our offices and most customer sites are air-gapped networks so can't remote into them. Getting good reliable access from your customer's network for the amount of bandwidth you need is normally not an option.

Plus a lot of the equipment we use it on has no network connectivity at all and isn't near any.

      @pete-s

It's mostly industrial automation applications where an additional license or a floating license is uber-expensive and not available.

Lots of them are legacy applications of which licensing of any type can no longer be purchased (P2V), etc.

Workstation has the features I need just can't find any documentation on it.

@voip_n00b yep I did that so I can power the host on / off and things like that but still don't see how you move the VM's

I understand there are a lot of ways to convert and move around but this needs to be moved very frequently

      This entire thing seems insane.
I can think of no business case for this kind of requirement.

The reason is because we use some VM's at the customer site for some work and then back in the office we continue to use that VM to work but we also have projects in between so we can't keep all that on our local laptops (not enough space with 3 8Tb drives in the laptop) so we need to be able to move them back and forth easily.

Can zerotier work as a gateway so that all devices on a lan can be accessed? Much like Logmein hamachi in gateway mode?

In the video link below in workstation version, 9 and 10 features were added to be able to move VM's back and forth from Workstation to ESXi easily but I can't find any info on how to do it.

I understand there are a lot of ways to convert and move around but this needs to be moved very frequently thus why i am researching this method.

    • Burn to Virtual CD Media

Is there any way to take a legacy application that will only burn to a cd (not an iso) and make it burn to an .iso file?

Most of the popular tools out here only read .iso or convert optical media to .iso

@pete-s The server was from the DCS Manufacturer and nothing to be found about them on the internet. The power supply burned and is toast because we tried to have it fixed at an electronics repair shop.

    • RE: Server 2003 P2V Issues

@pete-s if I can get it working I will find and buy a retail license or something. I will buy 50 if I can get it working.

Now that production is down money is no object and it's an open checkbook just trying to buy time.

My main concern is that even if I had a retail copy in hand it won't let me log in to do anything with the activation and that is where i am stuck.

    • RE: Server 2003 P2V Issues

@dustinb3403 I don't disagree that they made a pile of bad decisions but that's nothing to do with me as I am a private contractor so I don't work for them or care to help them with their management issues as that's not what I get paid to do.

I was hired to find a temporary fix and start the upgrade process. The upgrade process has started and concurrently I am trying to get a temporary fix going so I can concentrate on the upgrade and get paid.

The poor management issues are their business quite frankly,

    • RE: Server 2003 P2V Issues

@dustinb3403 It's running a specialty application for manufacturing that is also no longer made so upgrading it means about a 1.2 million dollar project and about 4-6 months of engineering work and 8 to 12 weeks of install and commissioning work.

This work because of this is now approved but I am just trying to get the system working again to be able to run production and meet orders until a new system is in place.

Most of this engineering will be done by me and my company bu the focus now is getting back in production.

    • Server 2003 P2V Issues

I had a 2003 server that the power supply was dying on and could not find a replacement so I did an image backup with shadow protect sever as well as ran the VM ware P2V tool and recovered it to a VM.

When I try to log in with the local admin-level account I have it says it's not activated and I can't log in until it is activated. I assume it broke the activation since the VM is a very different hardware profile but I can't even log in at this point.

I tried the solution here but it does nothing after the command is run https://sarithvs.wordpress.com/2014/01/27/this-copy-of-windows-must-be-activated-before-you-can-log-on/

How can I get a 2003 key that I can activate? Would that be possible with a volume license? Or MSDN subscription?

I really don't have much knowledge of the visual studio and MSDN subscriptions.

      Any ideas?

    • Best Dedup Software

I have a customer that has 5 different NAS desktop-style boxes on their network all different sizes from different vendors.

They are out of space and want to move to something rack-based large enough to hold everything. Thinking of using Synology as it's simple enough.

Their previous IT person had some of the boxes backing up to each other so there is a lot of copies of the same data strown all over the place between the 5 boxes.

They want 1 clean copy of the existing data on the new NAS. There are 2 NAS boxes that have the primary bulk of the recent data so I was thinking of moving that to the new NAS and run a dedup to remove any copies / old file backups and then I want to compare what's on the new NAS to the other boxes and delete copies and move data that I don't have on the new NAS.

In the end, they want to get rid of all the old NAS boxes and just have 1 NAS box that is backed up to the cloud and to tape to be taken offsite.

They also want a search solution to run against the NAS and the Synology built-in search sucks and just wears out the drives as it never stops indexing.

They have the old google physical search appliance that needs to come out once a new search solution is found.

Any opinions on the dedupe software and the search software r appliance?

    • RE: New storage... what about file server

@scottalanmiller That's insightful and makes a lot of sense. Also, I never knew mapped drives were that much of a security risk.

I would say 95% of the customers I deal with still stand up new offices that way and have shared drives for the user base.
