At this point, I'm considering trying out XenServer..

      Don't, it's a dead project. Try KVM.

I don't doubt for a second that you know what you're talking about, but if it's a dead project, then why the heck is their site still up and allowing people to download and use their products?

I'm not even sure what you mean to imply by this question. Why would the status of a project affect vendors trying to make money from people buying it or things around it?

Oh come on, you know what I meant. I suppose yes the obvious answer is in case someone wants to send them money.. but I can just download XenServer and use it for free can't I? No money there..

You certainly can use it and it is free but the issue is the development moving forward with security and feature updates.

    • RE: How do you listen to your music library on the go

So I have been using Google Music since 2008 and it has evolved. Before you had the uploader app on Windows and then uploaded to the cloud. Now it is through Google Chrome as an extension and then the music is uploaded. I can stream my music on Iphone and Android no problem with the Google Music application.

I also have NextCloud with the AudioPlayer to listen to music online:
      https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/audioplayer
      https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/music

My last option is to use Spotify with Local Files as it syncs the files on your desktop through Playlists.

Corning and imaging are two totally different things as the others have said. You need to define what you actually want to do here more clearly.

Okay. I believe I want to know more about Imaging. Actually the curiosity to know about Imaging arise from my previous post, where @scottalanmiller mentioned "Imaging should take around thirty minutes and, in reality, we are often getting that number lower and lower." It was regarding restoring the system when it is not working properly.

Yes which is fine, imaging is about restoring or setting up a system to an initial state where all the applications are installed and activated and ready to be used. It doesn't restore however the user's information.

I'm confused why your UTM device would even know or care what hypervisor it may or may not be on.

Have you tried using it, on your ESXi 6.5 system?

The appliance is downloadable in OVF which is for VMware. It is not compatible on 6.5 and displays errors, which is why I called support and that's when they told me it only works on up to 6.

Oh, is this an older UTM that they aren't supporting any longer? Do they have a current version?

hahaha.. No. They (SonicWall) said 6.5 will eventually be supported.

That's insane. vSphere 6.5 has been out for over a year, and they can't support it yet? This kind of stuff bothers me about vendors.

I was talking with someone the other day who had moved a bunch of VMs from a vSphere 5.0 cluster host to a fresh vSphere 6.5U1 cluster. There were some Linux VMs that were not supported on 6.5 per the 3rd party vendor and would have required a tremendous effort to update the 3rd party software running in the Linux VMs. So they ended up being left on the 5.0 cluster for now. It's not exactly the same as your situation here, but it was equally frustrating to hear.

ok turns out I'm a fkn idiot and their most recent version of GMS Analyzer works on 6.5. I just got a strange error the first time I tried to deploy the OFV, researched the error, then found a work around that said to install the previous version first, which does not work with 6.5. Calling support, they told me that previous version wouldn't work on 6.5 but failed to tell me to try the newest version. The second time I called support, the tech I got told me that the newest version does work with 6.5 and I gave it a THIRD try and of course it worked find.

I have no idea how and why I never cease to be an idiot.

I was going to say I have that on Hyperv, Vmware and Xenserver and has not been an issue 😕 but again we all learn something new everyday. Doesn't mean we are idiots.

For those who use Veeam Backup and Replication, do you also use Veeam One, or just use the standalone Backup and Replication product?

I would be content with job notifications, which I believe can be configured with just Backup and Replication. If you use Veeam One, do you find the reporting provides a good bit of value?

If you have Hyperv and Vmware it is helpful otherwise XenServer or KVM is not helpful to you. I use the Veeam Backup and Replication standalone and leave the monitoring to Zabbix so far.

Also, you can definitely migrate to dissimilar hardware models... Scroll about half way down

You will lose some settings, but the data should remain intact.

Edit: Looks like the source and destination machines would need to be on the same firmware version... which could be tricky if you don't know or didn't keep up with the updates.

Doesn’t need to be on the same firmware, I have done it many times. It will work fine.

    • RE: question about setting up a new domain controller

@dave247 said in question about setting up a new domain controller:

Hi guys I have kind of a noob question..

I have two 2008 R2 domain controllers: DC1 and DC2 (one physical one virtual), and an on-prem Exchange 2010 (SP3) server in my environment. I think I've learned enough now where I'm comfortable setting up a new domain controller and replacing an old one but I still technically haven't done it yet.

I would like to set up a 2012 R2 domain controller to replace the physical 2008 R2 domain controller, DC1. DC1 is the primary DNS server that everything in the environment looks to, and so I want to make sure everything gets replaced with the new IP address.

Note: I am going 2012 R2 DC right now because it's the highest I can go with having Exchange 2010 SP3 running. I will eventually be going to Exchange 2016 and then at that point I can make a 2016 DC.

The main thing I'm wondering about is if I can simply set up the new 2012 R2 server, promote it to domain controller, and then one by one point my servers and all the other statically mapped systems to it, without experiencing any disruptions. And right now DHCP is being controlled by the physical DC but of course that would be trivial to replace once I get the new 2012 R2 DC up and running. I really just want to be able to make the transition without disruption.

Is this pretty much the way to do it?

First let me get this straight, you have two DCs and one has Exchange on it?
That should be changed if that’s the case as it is unsupported.

As for the DC you can go up to a DC with Server 2016, as long as the domain and Forest level are on Server 2008 or 2008 R2 your Exchange 2010 will continue to work.

DHCP should be configured so all the devices get connected and pointing to your new DC. Test everything and make sure to have the replication working.

As always make backups before and after doing changes.
