Looks like the mobo comes w/ a tuning utility that lets you cycle down the fan levels. They were both on 10. As soon as my apartment's AC stops being loud I'm going to toy w/ the levels and see how that affects audibility.

    • RE: Water Cooler question

I work at home all day w/ my girlfriend at a shared desk, and I'd say that while not loud, they're very audible, whereas in the t110.2's original case it was dead silent. So I do notice it, and it does bother me.

    • Water Cooler question

The only source of any audible noise is from the two fans of my H75, which had to be mounted outside the chassis because of the god-awful case I chose ( which I may try to return ). My question is, CPU temps seem to hover at around 24-31 C at any load I throw at it ( I keep my apartment very cold and have fans blowing at me, semi-toward the case )... Is it totally insane to just turn the water cooler fans off and watch the temps to see if they get much higher? To make it dead silent?

      Soooo... Wadda ya reckon?

      Super disappointing 😞

"But support for DDR4, M.2, and a faster GPU make up for lacklustre CPU performance."

M.2 can't compete w/ a single Sata Samsung 850 in rapid mode, integrated graphics don't apply to me. My question is, what does the switch to DDR4 bring? Would a system w/ an identical processor and all other components be palpably faster?

    • Multicore Enhancement

After reading an Article on Anandtech about how many modern mobos have a feature called "Multicore Enhancement", which works on non-K processors and is tantamount to shutting off turbo boost and having all cores of your CPU run at maximum turbo speed ( in my 1240 v2's case, all would run at 3.8 Ghz instead of 3.4 ), I thought "hey, why not" and as I migrated my CPU and RAM to a new motherboard that claims to support it, I chose a water cooler ( for a few other reasons too, to become familiar with them, to make my build look a bit sexier - transparent case, and to support the excess heat from enabling all 8 threads at 3.8 Ghz ).

But, now that it's all set up and working, I cannot find a feature called that anywhere in the BIOS. There are a ton of OC settings, none of which are obviously it. There are options to turn off Speed Step and Turbo, and it almost seems like turning off those two would be the same if the proc then ran at the higher speed, but I'd guess those'd make it run at the normal speed and never upscale.

Has anyone used multicore enhancement before? It is just not compatible w/ Xeons even though it's compatible w/ non-K i5 and i7s? Or is it just really hard to find?

New system is up and stable. Pictures to follow.

Even pre-OC, SSD performance appears to be slightly faster on the new mobo than it was on the original t110.2 system.

Running an R7 360 at the moment, my EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0 arrives tomorrow. I'm excited.

So I highly recommend against the black edition of the In Win 904. Mine arrived today and it's pretty bland. The material doesn't look that nice, and they awkwardly chose a red logo on the front of the case which will look bad w/ a variety of internals. Mine is giving off a heavy Christmas vibe against the green and white of my CX750M. That and the silver one just looks so much better in pictures. I'm going to see if I can return mine and get the silver or another case altogether.

If this is accurate they're actually cheap too.

      Holy. Shit.

If that's true they just cannibalized their WHOLE product line

Looks like those are at 1000 proc quantities. So before resellers' markup. I'm not sure what margins are like but I'd guess they might be anywhere from $30-ish to upwards of $100 a proc, who knows.

Skylake will retire VGA support. That's crazy. It's been SO long.

That's good because they're sure an eyesore. It'll be nice not to have a blue robot chunch hanging off the side of my fancy laptop in theFuture.

    • Skylake Release and Decision Making

I ordered a new motherboard, water cooler, case, and power supply to perform a transplant on my current Xeon 1240 v2 / 32GB / 850 Pro system to use for the next X months while I gain overclocking knowledge and while the Skylake processors slowly materialize. But then I read somewhere that they're actually going on sale next week after the Gamercon conference ( or whatever it's called ). If that's true, should I probably just cancel my current mobo etc. orders and wait? What would you do?

I'm thinking I can buy an unlocked SkyLake and OC mobo and then just run everything at stock while I learn the process of OC-ing, and with that approach will get the best of both worlds without sinking the $$ into the Xeon migration, which will also let me keep it as a server for side use.

Thoughts? Do Skylake K procs indeed come out next week as far as anyone knows?

Right now it doesn't do anything. I'm going to turn it into something spesh which will involve Arduino and ideally blowing minds.

      What kind of wood?

Open to almost anything, ideally it'd be a nice bamboo like so:

But it's just for a functional prototype so any attractive wood would be fine.

It seems to happen with most expensive laptops. They just aren't worth it.better to keep desktops for performance and laptops for mobility.

I owe you an I told you so. Ditching the ASUS too and back on my workstation. Ordered a new motherboard and GTX 980. Going to pick up a weaker laptop.

Turns out that even on the highest end gaming laptops money can buy ( that aren't $4,000+ w/ SLI and 3 minutes battery life ) you can't develop for Oculus, which is my next little adventure.
