    • RE: Install BookStack on Fedora 27

      Hi everyone,

i just registered here to say thank you for this awesome step-by-step tutorial! 🙂
I use bookstack in my virtualbox VM with NAT network settings and i just had to use "#" for "APP_URL" in order to use http://localhost inside of the VM. 🙂

One big problem i have is the maintenance. In order to backup the database i have to use the MariaDB root password, which somehow isn't the one i used to install bookstack. Whenever i try to change the root password my database gets wrecked so hard that i have to restore old snapshots in order to systemctl start mariadb again.

i stoped mariadb then used mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables & and then connected to mysql and changed the root password with SQL statements. After that the database is unusable. 😞

      Any idea? 😕

It worked! I have access to my root user for the DB again. I could not kill the process the way it was described on the website, but i could search with ps -auxww and found the PID to use kill for. 🙂

I am not really sure if i did "composer install" as root or not. Just in case i made the mistake to install with the root user, is there any way to fix that or is it worth the time to reinstall everything just with a normal account without sudo and without root?

Okay thanks alot. I am just scared about some "major" mistakes, since bookstack will end up being my private documentation for... well... everything. 😄

    • RE: Fedora 28....time to upgrade

@black3dynamite it worked. I used the uninstall.sh for vBoxGuestAdditions before upgrading and this time everything worked.
But there are no "Default Fedora 28 vBoxGuestAdditions" to be found in the new version.
I will probably have to reinstall it like i used to do.

Edit: reinstalling the vboxguestadditions broke Fedora 28 again... sigh..

      Edit2: lsmod | grep -i vbox
gives me a list of active vbox modules. "vboxguest" and "vboxvideo" can be found but the one missing is "vboxsf" which is needed for sharing folders and so on. I couldn't find anyone else except me with that problem yet. Really odd. 😄

Edit3: I finally got this thing to work again, yuchee
For everyone who is experiencing the same issue as i did you have to do the following:

      1. Before upgrading to Fedora 28 use uninstall.sh to uninstall your current guest additions.
      2. Upgrade Fedora like explained above
      3. After upgrading make sure your "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" is up-to-date in ver: 5.2.10r122406
        Download: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
      4. Install/update it > Virtualbox > Settings > Additional Packages
      5. boot the Fedora 28 Guest and log in.
      6. Double check if your virtualboxguestadditions.iso file is up-to-date aswell.
If not you will need to replace that file prior to mounting the CD-Drive.
        Download: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.10/
The file you need is this one: VBoxGuestAdditions_5.2.10.iso
      7. Mount the drive into your Fedora 28 Guest and install it.
      8. Reboot > done. 🙂

@scottalanmiller I have to admit.... Jira is the worst piece of sh*t i've ever witnessed 😄
Luckily i was able to switch the internal Customer Service ticket system to osTicket.

Should be noted, Jira isn't a ticket system, so if you had tried to use it as that, it would definitely be painful. It's more of a KanBan PM tool.

Right, it's for engineering work, not support work. Project management, not tickets. Rather different tools.

Thats probably why i dislike it so much. Good to know. I see myself getting the order to implement a new system soon anyway.. sigh. 😄

We tried Jira but used Asana instead. Cheaper, faster, easier.

NextCloud has a really basic KanBan built in, too.

Thanks alot. I will keep them both in mind whenever i have to redo the whole ticket "thingi" again for every department.

I know, basically my DEV department loves it, but we admins hate it because it makes no sense to use it as a ticket-system for basic stuff like "my PC does not work - did you tried turning it off and on again?"

LOL, if you have full time Jira experts, it's not that bad.

We don't have this kind of lovely people in the company i am working at haha 😄

@cherryman If you are also using Jira and a few other Atlassian tools, then I'd pick Confluence too. But if it is your only tool from them, I don't think that it is a strong wiki entry on its own.

We are also using Jira to split up several ticket systems based on their usecase. Dev, Admins, Customer Service and so on.

I don't think that it is a strong wiki entry on its own.

Why not? I am not missing anything to be honest. You could argue about the price, but besides that, why do you thing it is not "strong". Just curiosity here: What are you missing in that tool?

      What about atlassian.com/software/confluence ?
It works perfectly well as intranet. You can do a bunch of stuff. You can fully use the AD to login, to craft rules, who is able to read, write or even access the intranet (AD-groups). It's not free though, but it sadly works very well and can be installed on your host server.
You can even start pages for every department, so that public stuff from the HR for example can be read but all the IT-documentation stuff is hidden...

It's pretty standard as a wiki goes. Expensive, though.

Thats true. At the end of the day you have to buy a licence to maintain the service.
Every company i worked on ended up throwing away their current solution for confluence.

Fedora 28 now includes virtualbox addon by default.

oh, okay? That's good to know. Maybe i will really try to deinstall the guest additions first and try the upgrade again tomorrow. I will give feedback if that worked. 🙂

Did you by chance have virtualbox guest add on installed already? You can try removing it first.

Yes that's it probably. Completely forgot this point. My problem is that i really need them for the shared folder, so i can't risk upgrading and not being able to reinstall the guest additions afterwards. I will just wait (a month?) and try again. Maybe things will arrange themselves, hehe. 😉 Still thanks a lot for the input. 🙂
