RE: When is SSD a MUST HAVE for server? thoughts? Discussion :D
There is also the difference of using SSD for caching or for storage itself. If you are running 3TB of storage, you would need around 300GB of SSD cache. A cost effective alternative for going all flash.

RE: RIP David Bowie
@original_anvil With the album being a work of art, regardless of his condition. Keeping it up, right till the end.

RE: Server and Storage Redundancy
@JaredBusch Hyper-V replica is nice for that scenario, however I don't see why StarWind isn't a good fit here. I mean if OP can dedicate any 2 servers for storage, they can run the free version of StarWInd, which effectively gives them better redundancy than Hyper-V replica, without any additional investments. The big question here, is how many servers will they be going with, once OP talks this through with management.

RE: The more replies a topic has...
Usually, this can be easily explained. If a topic is a request for help, then the early posts are trying to pinpoint what's wrong. Then, the longer it takes to narrow down the issue, the more specific the questions get and the more complex the proposed solutions.

RE: Hardware refresh and Selling the Solution
As Scott said, using a dedicated SAN for this kind of environment is currently the leading cause of cancer in the United States. You could use some type of VSAN to provide shared storage between the servers. VSAN/HP VSA/StarWind will do the trick if you decide to repurpose existing hardware. If you decide to get new hardware, then Scale or StarWind's HCA are your friends.

RE: ZFS Based Storage for Medium VMWare Workload
I would recommend looking at StarWind SA for example.
That solution fits your requirements perfectly, it will also provide you with HA storage that will ensure the business continuity.
As for support, they offer a single point of contact no matter what issue you face, plus the system will be shipped to your site fully preconfigured and pretested. -

I think this has probably become an issue for @scottalanmiller and @Nic

RE: Explain Hyperconvergence Like I Am Five
Looking back, when I was five, I'd have a hard time understanding what a hypervisor is.

RE: Morrowind on the Asus ROG
You need to install the Morrowind Overhaul 3.0, as well as make sure you have Full screen mode and pixes shading off in the settings. I remember seeing someone with a similar issue on the Steam forums and it resolved the issue for them.

RE: What Do You Call a User That Is Out of ASM?
"User out of support" is the best one. Or on a more formal note "support contract expired" if you need a multiple choice box describing their support status.

RE: Explain Hyperconvergence Like I Am Five
@scottalanmiller That sounds like some quality content incoming. You could do it as a feedback video from her on Scale's webinar. Let's see if it really works for 5 year olds.

RE: When is SSD a MUST HAVE for server? thoughts? Discussion :D
Any opinions on VSAN's that have SSD caching? I mean, they give you a lot of other stuff, but what would you get in terms of performance?

RE: What Do You Call a User That Is Out of ASM?
@Reid-Cooper I've seen several very "interesting" reasons for people not to renew support.
One is "the solution is rock solid and we've never had issues with it, so we don't need support". That one goes along the lines of my house has never been robbed, so I might as well remove my alarm. And open the front door for good measure.
Another one is going self supported. I mean I can see why people would go with this one, but still. Pretty unreasonable in a production environment. -
Windows server 2016 licensing
How does it work? The information provided by Microsoft is unclear and contacting them about it brings controversial answers from different people. How does their per core licensing go?

RE: Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play
Anyone playing any blizzard games? Diablo 3 or Hearthstone?

RE: When is SSD a MUST HAVE for server? thoughts? Discussion :D
@original_anvil That seems pretty interesting. Does look like a good alternative to all flash, if on a tight budget.

RE: New IT manager making changes... should I be concern?
As for the SAN-less solutions out there you can look at StarWind Hyper-Converged Appliance in case you are looking for something that is very easy to implement and will easily work with any hypervisor.
Another option that you may want to explore is VMware vSAN, that one will be good if you would like to stick to VMware and you are fine with having one node as a witness.
S2D is also an option that is worth your attention, that option should fit well if you would want to stick with Hyper-V as hypervisor and you have multiple VMs licensed with Microsoft Windows. -
RDS Side by Side of VMware and Hyper-V
This might be a bit of a necropost, but has anyone actually managed to do a side-by-side comparison of TS going with
1.VMWare+VSAN
2.Hyper-V+StarWind
3.Something like S2D?It would be interesting to look at prices vs features of each option.

RE: Hardware refresh and Selling the Solution
In before the EMC reps in question get told off for violating their own EULA and they inform you, you can't use it in production anymore, however you can get a 5% discount from the full paid license and a jar of cookies:)
