@DustinB3403 said in Doubt on a script- Backup site & DB:

Here is a topic from the ubuntu forums.

Are you trying to delete files from the source or the destination?

      If from the destination

      "rsync -avh source/ dest/ --delete"

Might be how you need to enter the command.

The first line on the script cleans up old backup files, so during rsync i want to compare the source and destination and cleanup accordingly. I will try with the --delete at the end and see if that helps

    • Doubt on a script- Backup site & DB

Just wanted to check a script that I am working on:

Goal is to take complete site backup with db and then rsync to remote server, email the download link

      #Cleanup old backup files
      rm -f /home/ACCOUNT_NAME/BACKUP_FOLDER/backup-*.tgz

#Insert date and a random key (key added to use it on public url to avoid guessing of public download link)
      date=$(date +%Y-%m-%d)
      key=$(head /dev/urandom | md5sum | cut -c1-10)

#MySQLdump of the account to the backup folder
      mysqldump -uDB_USER -pDB_PASSWORD --single-transaction DB_NAME 2>&1 | gzip > /home/ACCOUNT_NAME/BACKUP_FOLDER/backup-${date}-${key}_SITE_NAME.sql.gz

#Compress the web directory and sql backup to a single backup file
      tar czf /home/ACCOUNT_NAME/BACKUP_FOLDER/backup-${date}-${key}_SITE_NAME.tgz /home/ACCOUNT_NAME/public_html /home/ACCOUNT_NAME/BACKUP_FOLDER/backup-${date}-${key}_SITE_NAME.sql.gz 2> /dev/null

#Rsync the final backup file to remote server, also cleanup existing old backup prior to the transfer by comparing source directory
      rsync -a --delete /home/ACCOUNT_NAME/BACKUP_FOLDER/backup-${date}-${key}_SITE_NAME.tgz REMOTE_USER@REMOTE_SERVER_URL:/home/ACCOUNT_NAME/public_html/SITE_NAME_BACKUP/

      #Email the backup link
echo "Latest backup is available at http://REMOTE_SERVER_URL/SITE_NAME_BACKUP/backup-${date}-${key}_SITE_NAME.tgz" | mail -s "Server backup available for download" [email protected]

The rsync command for some reason is not cleaning up old files!

Is this correct or are there any options to tweak this?

That's interesting. More and more things are moving to a model like that, the zero knowledge thing, but people are used to companies have that knowledge and it will cause a lot of problems.

1Password does the same thing actually, if you forget the master password, its gone. Only thing is when you introduce dropbox for password sync, it defeats the purpose.

First step of the test ended up finding something interesting and funny! 🙂

I use 1password as my password manager and used to generate 20 character password, but i missed saving that! 🙂

So after i logged in, downloaded the desktop and tried to login only to realize that i didn't save the password. As any other solution, i just browsed the account settings as the web login was still on, to reset my password. Found this!

      F45C8Eh.png

Its a nice feature, but that means i don't have access to my account anymore. Tried the close account option and hoping that their support team can delete the account from their site so that i can create it again with same email id!

      https://www.sync.com/features/

Read few sites about this, and looks like it's a dropbox alternative concentrated more on Security and privacy. Their 2TB plan is cheaper than dropbox ($99/year on Dropbox gives your 1 TB but includes free 2 months, and Sync is $98/year with 2TB storage). Sync provides end-to-end encryption

      http://www.cloudwards.net/sync-com-vs-dropbox/

I am planning to test this.

Digital frames are nothing new - now they've just added the ability to publish from your phone.

Didn't we have that before? My AppleTV tied to a monitor did that years ago.

LOL yeah that was kinda my point - I'm not sure why the OP felt this was post worthy. yeah that's kinda harsh.

I know that there are several ways to push your photo library to a display, i use my chormecast backdrop app which shows the selected photos or library from google photos, but thought getting this on a photo frame was nice with the filtering options they have. All of this started when i was looking for options to build a photo frame using raspberry pi and found this, thought of sharing it here! 🙂

Samsung Knox which i really like

That's a big feature they have. I don't know why more companies haven't jumped on that.

I have a Samsung phone... I always thought that Knox was the bootloader lock or something. Is it something else now?

Its like a container, so you literally get 2 phone spaces separate from each other, as i said i have most apps both on the outside and inside knox. Very useful to keep both personal and official spaces seperate

    • RE: Smartphone doldrums

I was an iPhone user till 4 and switched to Android. Was on S5 which was horrible, then to HTCM7 which was OK, then to M8. I really liked that, but gave it to my mom. Now as part of my corporate mobile plan now on S7. I am pretty happy with S7 mainly for the dual sim, no battery drains (at least for me), even though i have tons of apps and files on it and even have Samsung Knox which i really like. I have installed same apps both on the base android and inside knox so can use, for eg: whatsapp; 1 number on base and another on Knox, Dropbox (personal and official) and so on.

One thing i don't understand is why Apple never created a dual sim phone! And i guess the lack of headset jack on the new phone is a bad move, i personally know lot of people who are apple fans but frustrated that they need to buy an additional adaptor to use their expensive headset or buy separate air pods which has a high chance of losing,

Which, I think, makes it innovative. First of its kind.

Amazon fire phone has multi camera and its been there for a while

So what could be the possible safe options? Ofcourse first step would be lock down workstations, proper end point protection etc but how can we make sure that using a second nextcloud doesnt really affect when the primary is affected or are there no options in this case?

His plan is to use sync clients on local machines, syncing to the local server. Then from the local NextCloud to the remote Nextcloud in the dc (I assume NextCloud to NextCloud sync is possible!)

One of my friends was looking for a self hosted storage solution and i suggested NextCloud.

He had few doubts regarding that, I didn't get much time to check on this but thought of posting it here.

What does the community/free edition lacks compared to the enterprise version. I didnt see a comparison list on the site. The guy wants to setup for a small office of 50 users, he want to add a local NextCloud server and another nextcloud in a dc to sync from the local.

He also asked about ransomware risks.
