Oh man, you Americans. Go metric! We did, and we've never looked back!! Cups and pints suck.

I agree. In school, we were taught primarily metric, as it would be the primary measurement system by when we got out of high school. Somehow that changeover didn't happen, and I"m left wondering how many teaspoons are in a gallon.

Yeah...who is this bing you speak of? Seriously, who here uses bing often? Personally I have the bing webmaster tools just because I didn't want to ignore bing/yahoo search.

I use Bing, primarily because I'm anti-Google. The peru map that's mentioned is listed in the "Related Searches" section, not the actual results.

eh? are you implying that they have compromised most of the websites out there? or at least the big boys? if not, assuming it's encrypted from my desk to their server, how would they have unecrypted access?

      SSL decryption's pretty easy for a man-in-the-middle.

      What? Please explain.

I have to give Scott his point that the hardware has already been compromised, so the encryption is potentially pointless since they have direct access to it pre encryption, but post SSL encryption being 'easy' to decryption... help me out here.

It's fairly common now for content filters to decrypt SSL traffic. If enterprise-grade products can do it, why wouldn't government-grade ones do it too?

If done properly, technology empowers workers to get things done themselves in a more efficient fashion. As a Holacracy practitioner, I don't see much use for a traditional management structure anyway. That being said, there will always some degree of overhead for steering and exception handling.

    • Wildstar - New MMO Launching Next Month

I thought I'd take a moment away from answering posts to actually make one!

Wildstar is an MMORPG set to launch in a little over a week from now. It's something that I didn't think I'd like at first, as it's more cartoonish in appearance, but it's a very new take on how to play an MMO. Rather than tab-target something and hit an ability, or the FPS-style aiming of ESO, they introduce a new style of targeting, which really changes gameplay. I'm going to leave 3 videos here that highlight why it's such an entertaining and fresh style of gameplay.:

Come on, you know you want to!

    • RE: Windows Phone Revisited

I think it depends on what you do with it. I have a Lumia 620 that serves the purpose. The phone, SMS, email, and calendar functions are decent, which are all I really use a phone for. Apps and such are on my tablet.

What are your experiences with IO bottlenecks? Have you considered addressing those cost effectively via Flash based or Solid State Drive (SSD) based caching software?

I can't think of the last time I didn't use some sort of flash cache or another. It allows for much greater bang for the buck when it comes to storage performance.

What SSD caching solution did you use and for which application/OS?

Typically a flash-based write cache on the host's SAS controller or VMware vSAN. The only bare-metal OS I run in a server environment is ESXi.

Great, thanks. What are some of the typical applications that benefit from write-caching in your environment?

In my environment, or my clients' environments? My environment's on AWS, so I'm not aware of the back-end hardware. My clients' environments are fully virtualized, so everything, really.

Join.me's not realy designed for remote tech support work. If you're looking to do remote tech support work, take a look at LogMeIn Rescue. It's not free, but hopefully you're charging for the work you're doing.

I completely agree join.me is not for remote support. You won't be able to see things like UAC prompts that come up while power users may be logged into the machine. LMI Rescue can work quite well as @alexntg mentions. I personally like the free version of LMI in conjunction with LMI Central (despite LMI's recent force to go to a paid version).

Yes, for supporting company-owned or company-managed computers, LogMeIn is great. It's not as good a fit for one-off support, as it involves installing the client on the machine. Rescue shines for situations where it isn't feasible to install the client on the machines you're supporting. So perhaps the question to the OP would be is this for internal/managed computers, or computers belonging to others?

This is about 1/3 of the price of LMI

      http://www.mikogo.com/features/

It's also missing some features, such as reboot/reconnect and stored session credentials. I'm curious as to how it works with UAC, though.

Really? Do you recommend replacing a unitrends appliance every three years?

The Unitrends boxes are generally a little bit more robust than a Drobo, though I really don't work with Unitrends at all. If it's as important as you say it is, why would you want to take that chance?

      *Edited for disclaimer.

3 years is getting kind of old for a device of that nature. You may want to just replace the whole thing.
