I'm not sure what kind of response something like this will get, but I'm going to post it here. Friend has applied for every job in his small town in Spain, several times, and there's just no work. What kind of work does he do? What part of Spain?

$2K for a flight? We had someone fly here from NY for several hundred yesterday. $2K is a luxury flight to the states.
I think that he is going down the wrong path. The US has fewer, not more, social systems. Leaving a socialist, takes care of everyone country to one where he would be an illegal immigrant with the worst possible language background for an immigrant and no way to work. He'd be likely arrested and sent back to Spain. I can't imagine a worse option given his situation.

He really needs to be prepared for a massive cost of living crunch in the US. The begging that you can do in Spain to pay the bills you can't do in the US. Here in Spain you can buy a great house for $40K and get dinner for $3. There are far more jobs for him here than in the US (zero). Having a lack of job skills is always hard, but in the EU he has an entire continent with job opportunities that he is legally able to do right now. In the US he has none. Without a college degree he is not even eligible for normal immigration options.
The EU is likely the best option for him in the entire world. Nowhere is more accepting of LGBT and nowhere has more job options and nowhere else is he already legal.
I can see why he is having issues. Like many Europeans, he thinks the US is some mythical promise land full of rich people and endless jobs. But Americans know this isn't the case. Yes, times are tough in Spain. But he's not tied to Spain, only the EU. And the EU isn't doing great, but it is doing okay. There are jobs. If he comes to the US, he's going to be in for a surprise of epic proportions - life threatening proportions.

I live in a great village with few jobs but great quality of life. You can rent a nice place here for $100 a month. Try that in the US!!

@scottalanmiller He's not able to get a job, and the only way to his town is via Bus. We're looking at the legal implications of emigrating two Spanish Citizens into the US

It's HARD. The US is the worst possible option for them. They could WALK to places in the EU or Switzerland and be able to work anywhere, for the cost of food and walking.
How did someone come up with the US as an option? Where could it possibly be worse to send them?

That's very fishy. The EU has the best welfare programs in the world. You think that they will get stuff in the US when their own nation(s) won't help them?
I've never heard of someone not getting assistance in Spain. Have you verified this?

Flights can be cheap, Aer Lingus, Norwegian Shuttle, etc. Check prices. We got a family of four to Spain for less than $2K a month ago. @ryanov is here having flown in from NY and thinking these prices are completely crazy too. He is fling back to the US tomorrow.

What city are they in? Where are they? Spain is a very large country.

@scottalanmiller And there was massive miscommunication for price set. Shouldn't be more than 1K both for one way for them to take a small amount of luggage with them.

Yes, $1K total for both would be hunting for the best possible prices. $700 per person is a reasonable amount, and nowhere near the lowest.

If they could raise $5K, which is their target amount, they could, in theory, live in Spain for a long time. Using it to get to the US might screw them - trapping them in a country where they lack the necessary citizenship to function. The US is NOT a welcoming country, in general. I hope no one has told them that this is a good idea.

Get them to Germany where there is massive welfare, moderate numbers of jobs and they are already clear to work and don't even need a passport. I've got good friends who just hitchhiked across France with no jobs, no money and did just fine. Like five days ago.
