      Hi All,
I have configured RAID 1 at HP Proliant DL160 P G5.I have installed Windows Server 2008.The OS is installed after giving the HP driver software while installing OS.I need to make one of the hard disk as degraded as in Linux and I need to add new hard disk with this server to synchronise the data in new hard disk.I need to know how to find which hard disk is degraded before adding the new hard disk? Can Anyone help me?

Which software RAID are you using? HP's software RAID or Windows?

I already informed and got information about the RAID at HP Proliant Server DL160 G5.Fake RAID for the server.I will configure it and say about the acknowledgement of taking the hard disk from the server.I installed the windows server 2008 with this HP Server

In theory, the Fake RAID should have indicator lights that show you which disk is having a problem.

I need to make one of the hard disk as degraded for testing purpose and this has to done at Client place. There is one of the hard disk was not working. So the light for the hard disk only one.How to find the degraded hard disk

Oh, there is likely no way to do that. Does the HP RAID documentation list a means of doing that? I don't know of any RAID system that has that feature.

I googled for that but there is no option I found about this issue. The issue is that HP Proliant DL 160 G5 has two disk configured with RAID 1.The one hard disk of the server is not working and the RAID 1 has to made to be worked after replacing a new hard disk by taking the damaged hard disk.

So the issue is that the RAID is already degraded?

@scottalanmiller Yes.RAID is already degraded in the server. So we are just started testing the same server for th e same issue

If it is degraded, you just need to pull out the drive and replace it with a good one. How do you know that it is degraded?

@scottalanmiller That is the question I also don't know. How to identify the degraded hard disk in the server. The Client side person said that the one of the hard disk in the server is degraded in the server. So We are trying to identify the hard disk in the server and so only we are searching to get the details regarding this issue.

Now I have added the one hard disk as Hot Spare for the RAID 1 and I need to synchronize the data in 3 rd hard disk which I configured the RAID1.How to Synchronize Data in the new hard disk?

I just added new hard disk as hot spare and waited for 30 Minutes and after that I took the second hard disk connection out and made the server to boot the OS.It gave me error that raid device is degraded OS did not boot and after that I restarted the server. Then the server booted into the Windows Server 2008.How it is possible?

Is this all for testing and learning or are you trying to fix an issue you are having?

Do you have a good backup of the data?

You've mentioned you added a disk to use as a hot spare, from what I found Fake Raid can't have hot spares and can't support hot swappable drives. Either way, this is a really unique situation, your time might be better spent getting a good backup of the data, getting new drives, setting up a more recommend RAID and restoring.

How do you know the array is degraded? During the boot only? Or is there something in the OS telling you that?

If you are getting nothing more than a popup in Windows that tells you that it's degraded, then there is probably something in the Event Logs that tell you exactly what port is degraded.

A hot spare is already connected at the time of failure. Do you mean a cold spare? And when you put in the cold spare, you didn't remove the failed disk first?
