The funny thing is that Bumblebee was a VW Beetle originally. Since the first Transformers movie was basically a paid ad for GM, I guess that wasn't going to fly.

Only the movies? In the US market, the original cartoon was also a vehicle for selling toys... so the whole franchise has always been that way.
