No seriously, it's May 1st not April 1st. The Haiku OS project, an attempt to rebuild BeOS without the original code, is closing in on being able to release a beta, after all of these years. You heard that right. Most of us thought that Haiku had disappeared years ago and the average IT Pro today doesn't even know that BeOS was a thing, but Haiku is forging forward and is still active.

To put the project into some perspective, BeOS only survived from 1995 - 2000, a run of just under five years. Haiku OS Alpha 4 release to Beta, if released today (which it is not) is five years alone. The attempt to rebuild BeOS has lasted nearly seventeen years thus far and is not even up to beta yet. It's a great project with lofty goals and the world does need important research operating systems like BeOS to push ideas forward, but the work being done here is hard and the scale of the Haiku work compared to the original BeOS project is incredible. BeOS went through several releases and a change of architecture (PowerPC to IA32) in its short five year run, and even had its own amazing hardware for part of that time.

Haiku OS will likely take more than two decades to get to a final release of a single version.

Perhaps one day I'll get around to installing Haiku on something to see what it is all about. Never did experiment with BeOS myself but I know some people who were in love with it.

I had all the books and the CD ROM box for it.
