Build a Pine 64 Android TV for Under $50

A cheap and fun project, especially for those looking for an Android TV device as they are pretty hard to find with the NVidia Shild out of stock for a bit at Amazon and priced at four times this unit (although quite a bit more powerful and with a great controller.) If you want an Android TV that you control, top to bottom, here it is and it is not expensive at all.

Any advantage to using Android rather than throwing something like Plex or Emby at it?
Also, unfortunate tagline is unfortunate.
Don't buy those insecure IoT devices, when you can easily build your own.

Well it is specifically Android TV, so if you want the Android TV OS, interface and compatibility. It's a video gaming platform as well as television system.

Pine 64s were not reliable last time I looked at them. There were many complaints, but that was about 6 months to a year ago.

I've not used one, but need a project to create an excuse to get one.

@scottalanmiller These might have been early issues....

Its not through. Its a stock Android 5.1 image that requires you to get a media style interface from the Play Store, rather than a "proper" Android TV system.

Oh, that's specifically contrary to the article. So the article just falsified that to get some publicity? That's shitty. That was literally the entire point of it

Weird, maybe they pulled the version. They have Android 7 TV...
