Ubuntu Community Has Misplaced $143,000 of Donations
-
This one is a book "oops". $143K of donations has gone missing.
-
That's a bit ridiculous. I wonder how many donations they got that they didn't lose?
-
Kind of a gray area. When you install Ubuntu it asks you to donate, but it doesn't really tell you where the money is going. So my question is if you donate without being told where the money is going, what leg do you have to stand on if its spent incorrectly or missplaced? It's not like they are lying to anyone.

I think that that is a legal issue. Don't non-profits have to show where money is going?

They have to report and make those financial statements available to anyone who requests them. But a lot of places get around showing exactly what they are using it for by making Large general funds. Also they can't (usually) give the tax free money to an indivdual as it's no longer tax free. Sounds like it was embezzlement to me.

That's the thing, if money goes missing they can't accept it as a tax free donation, I believe. So they become liable for those funds since they cannot show that they are operating as a non-profit.

What might be interesting is seeing what percentage of their money was this. Was this 1% or 50%?

Good question.
