Installing OpenSuse 13.1 On A Server Via USB

Someone told me about it recently. Unetbootin supposedly will not work with Windows 8 / 8.1, but Rufus will. Also, there's a nice how-to online to reformat a drive that you had ESXi installed on using Rufus so that you can reclaim all the space. It is a great tool.

As far as 8 and unet, that is correct. Sadly. I think it's something with how 8 uses UEFI and all that nonsense. As far as the ESXi tutorial, I can't remember where but I did use it and it does work. Very cool stuff.

My relationship with Unetbootin began pretty rough. It was suggested to me to use for Win8. Needless to say, we're not on speaking terms.

Yea, that was my bad. I had never used it for Windows 8 at the time and could see no reason why it wouldn't work. But then again, it's Windows 8. However, if you had seen it back in the days when there was no utility that I knew of like it, you would feel differently. Sure, there are programs that you run to generate bootable flash drives. However, to be able to take any ISO and make it bootable off a flash drive? This utility was the first I saw like that. Like I said, it was originally a straight Linux utility. Back in my Ubuntu days. I love it. Gonna take a deeper look at Rufus shortly though.

Just to throw gas on the fire... you can always use this Microsoft utility to create a bootable USB stick from an ISO.

I've had a few corruption issues with the download for OpenSuse itself, so it's taken me a bit to get this going.

Coincidentally, part of this specific project is to build out the local lab deployment source for this stuff. Once this is up and running, OpenSuse, CentOS, Ubuntu and FreeBSD sources will be cloned there so that you can deploy at any time with lightning speed.

I told @mike-ralston that downloading any Linux isos via mirrors is not a good idea. Torrents for those are infinitely faster and more reliable.
