"Attention Required" On HP P2035n printer

This one is starting to stump me. Occasionally we get this error with 2 printers at a clients office. First response, of course, is 'check paper, check toner doors, etc.' but about 80% of the time that is not the case. This is where it gets a bit more interesting.
Sometimes when this is happening and showing as such on the print server, the macs can still print, which made me think driver, but the amount of times those have been replaced is ridiculous. And sometimes it seems to go away by itself. At least, if there is a solution that is being done onsite by the users, I do not know it and they do not share it.
Has anyone experienced this before?

Are there still documents in the print queue on client machines when this happens? And they are all going through the same print server, right (i.e. no one printing directly to the printer by ip)? -
Could be a bug in the printer too. Might be a firmware problem.

@NetworkNerd Yeah, the documents hang in the queue and still show up on the print server, even while others can print. To the best of my knowledge every computer is hooked to the printer via the server.

My question to you is: when the Macs can still print, I'm assuming they are mapped to the printer by IP, whereas your Windows machines are shared through the server? Can you confirm this?

I was going to suggest moving one of the workstations to connect to the printer via ip and not via the server to see what happens. That sounds like you are on par, but we shall see.

The Macs are NOT printing through IP - I had them connecting through Bonjour. (unless it was changed by someone else)

Not super familiar with Bonjour. Does that mean they are accessing the share?

So how does Bonjour work? Does it discover the printer and map by hostname?

Ok, that gave me enough of an understanding to understand how the Macs are connecting but not by IP or the share.

So have you confirmed the IP isn't changing on that printer when it goes to "Attention required"?

@ajstringham I will not be able to check that until the issue crops up again, but to my knowledge the printer should be set statically, and the queue still shows up on the print server and refreshes. So it still communicates with the server.

When it goes to Attention Required, is it not able to print, or is it just slow? Can you get a screenshot at the next available opportunity?

Suggestion: check the HP site and see if the unit needs a firmware update. Fairly easy to do through CLI.

Can you map this printer to a machine by IP and see if you have the same issues printing by IP as you do through the server?

Also not a bad idea. I'd be surprised if there was one though. Unless there was some major bug, the 2035n is a pretty low-end model. I doubt they spend too much time writing firmware updates for a straight monochrome printer.
