Yes, my guess is that they found out about the licensing, and knew that their current offerings basically made them totally useless for Windows customers (read: basically everyone) and had to totally shake things up. So they put all their eggs into the "Windows sweet spot" so that they are broadly applicable. I expect much bigger procs to come, but eight cores are the big ones to get for the largest portion of the market. That they were able to get such amazing octo-core units and with hyperthreading out the door so well timed is amazing.

Same here, they were such an awesome player for so long. Would be really nice to see them stage a serious come back. If AMD doesn't do well, Intel gets lazy.

Late in the year, the company will be launching its new Vega GPU architecture, the Zen-based Naples server CPU, mobile Ryzen parts with integrated graphics processors, and Radeon Instinct headless GPUs designed for supercomputing number crunching.
Looks like a lot of big releases for them this year. Hope it pays off, Intel isn't the only one that gets to slack if AMD isn't doing well.

They just released some new driver updates that did wonders for some of their newer cards. Really liking AMD's direction for gaming. Hoping the new chips will do the same for their CPU market.

I have a lot of love for AMD but... it's **ABOUT F(!#%ING TIME
Can only cheer for them for so long before one gives up hope... I'm not holding my breath until they've been benchmarked and tested 9 ways to sunday.

Their new Radeon Software gui thing is a nightmare. Just goto Global Setting>Wattman Pro or whateve they call it then try to unsee it.

I am really exited about this. I have always liked AMD and was starting to worry about them. Not that they couldn't compete but the management at AMD seemed to to be fumbling there for a while. Looks like that is resolved now. I have always enjoyed the performance AMD chips gave when compared to cost, even before Ryzen. Most people are not gamers or Engineers. So I could build a whitebox with AMD motherboard and chip at a good price.

I do all my virtualization with Xen or KVM so I hope they bring out some bigger chips that are still lower cost than Intel.

Hypervisor is not a factor. It's Windows that has the licensing. Hyper-V and VMware have no core limits or licensing either. But any Windows on top, that's what gets you.
So if you are 100% Linux, then you don't have to worry about this.

You are correct, I wasn't clear. I do KVM and Xen and all my servers I have virtualized are a Linux distro of some flavor. I hope that AMD doesn't hold back making bigger chips than 8 cores because of the Windows Licensing sweet spot is what I was trying to infer. Need more coffee....

The rumour is is that bigger ones are coming. It's just that eight cores is where all of the big money is right at the moment.
Even better than more cores would be getting hyperthreading density up. Quad or octo threads per core would crush Intel if they kept the efficiency up.

Is there actual info available for server parts yet? All that I've seen so far is data on the Ryzen 7 line which they seem to be positioning as high end desktop components. Not that it will stop people from running servers with them or anything.

Not yet. That is supposed to come later this year.
