WordPress New Site Question
-
I am about to do a total rehaul of our existing WordPress site. Change the theme we use, and a lot of the content.
I figured it would be easiest to set up a new temporary site, do all the work on that, and then just migrate it over, erasing the old one.
However, there are multiple ways of accomplishing this. I was wondering if anyone does this sort of thing, and how you normally proceed.
Multisite? Just install into a subdirectory of the existing website? Create a new site, say, on VULTR for a month?

Is @JaredBusch the WordPress Sheriff around these here parts?

I thought that @irj was that sheriff.

Migrate the site using UpdraftPlus. Then edit the migrated site.
You could also edit the live site and take full backups with Updraft Plus along the way. So you could restore to the original or any other point you feel is worth saving.

My question is more ... how do I set it up? Set it up as a subfolder on my main site? Set up multisite? (I will only have 1 site when I am done.) Install it on a new instance?
I guess as long as I have a domain (demo.domain.com) it should work when I transfer it and change the domain?

I have HostMonster for my personal Host. But I run several domains from it.
I have the domain folders set as _site So no reason you can't do something similar.
Adding your sub domain as you showed is the way I would go.. you can go so far as to copy your current, add the new db, update as needed for the pointers and have a duplicate site running in moments.

@BRRABill VULTR?, I thought you were an A2 kinda of guy?

I have A2.
If I were to do a subdirectory (and presumable a subdmoain) that is where I would do it.
I'm just not sure if it is easier to do a $5 instance for a month with an IP address and just transfer at the end,

That what I was thinking would be the best way.
I'd just change around a few folders and config files and be done.
But, I always like to run things by people. It's just me here, so there's no one to bounce ideas off of.

I recommend Updraft Plus because not only does it make this easier, but it is way to do backups going forward.

That Updraft Plus is legit...definitely worth the $95 I paid for it

What I would do is simply make a new directory and install another copy of WordPress. Create a new DB instance and go.
Existing site: /opt/jaredbusch
New site: /opt/jaredbusch_v2Similar for the new DB just create the DB with a new namev2 or whatever.
Update your Apache vhost files and off you go.
