Recommendations for Cameras
-
Looking for a recommendation on cameras. We are looking to upgrade our camera system from analogue and 2 DVRs to 1 NVR and a physically separate network. They have to be able to withstand cold temperatures, such as 30's to 40's constantly. Looking at at least 40-50 cameras per plant, 1 NVR per plant, 2 plants.
I have mentioned Ubiquiti but the boss wants something more "serious" looking, such as that that goes within the camera housing. He doesn't think that Ubiquiti cameras would deter somebody from doing something and looks a little SOHO.
Checked out Wyze, but thinking it would take on the same effect as the Ubiquiti with the Boss.
Any other recommendations? Also looking for recommendations for the NVR and switches.

Your boss is already emotionally invested.
He wants something "more serious looking" what does that even mean?
Put fucking stickers on all of the walls "Smile you're on camera, we will press charges".
FFS. . .
And if you really wanted to go over the top, pipe a feed of the camera's to a monitor that anyone looking to steal items can see themselves on camera like the malls and many SOHO businesses use to deter theft.
-
I am currently using ZoneMinder for my one camera at the house. It's not hard to pick up, but looks terrible.
If your boss wants something that "looks" more professional, we use the Avigilon sofware here and it works great with several kinds of cameras...
http://avigilon.com/products/video-surveillance/avigilon-control-center/If you want to get a quoted install, I can get you some contact info from the company that handles ours if you like.

The big names in security cameras are expensive, they do a nice job but will cost $60K+ for what you're looking for.
If you wanted to go with the Wyze route, they'll work, but they severely lack a central NVR. It's all SD card storage, they might have an online option.
But again, put stickers on the fucking walls if you boss is so paranoid that these options aren't "tough enough looking" or whatever bullshit he's smoking.
And if he wants to be a good boss, tell him to join ML and read the comments. Cause he is nuts.
-
"Oh security cameras need to be tough looking to deter theft" dur dur dur . . . moron. . .
The camera system needs to work well, and be easy to pull video off of. Nothing will stop a break in or theft. Your only option is to try and deter it.
Why lock your doors, if the door doesn't look tough.
That's the same argument here. . .

my question: how does This not look serious?
If it were me looking up and seeing one of these cameras I would probably stop what I am doing..

This is true, but a camera doesn't stop anyone from doing something they shouldn't. A bank vault doesn't actively stop someone from breaking in and taking all of the money. It deters them from trying.
The deterrent factor is what matters here, and 60+ cameras around your office is one hell of a deterrent. Add video surveillance signs and be done with it.

Why? when you can easily replace and position the ubiquiti equipment?

Id say!

more serious looking cameras
But for those prices. . . -
His boss doesn't have a clue what makes for a good solution. He wants to add "stuff" to make the cameras bigger and more bulky (and costly).
There is zero logic here.
Are these cameras at shoulder lever or something . . I mean if he is this concerned about the cameras being physically damaged (I assume because of estimated cost) than he should be just as concerned that anyone breaking in is going to just cut the power to the building and wait the 1-4 hours for the UPS batteries to die. . .

@DustinB3403 Settle down. Nobody said anything about deterring theft. You inferred that on your own. The purpose of the cameras is more for HR defense then anything.

The use case is still to "deter bad behavior". I could go back and edit every post and they are still 100% accurate and true.
Your boss is being emotional about this.

Well, For the defensive of people in general, We arent robots who think logically 100% of the time.
Being emotional, even on things as the OP says is completely normal. -
But there isn't any room for emotion in the conversation.
"I need a recommendation to be able to record and possibly deter bad behavior in/around the office"
There is no reason that the recommendation needs to look tough, the recommendation isn't a bouncer at a bar. . .
-
I cannot help what my boss thinks and feels. I can talk to him logically all day long, but when its done, it is still his decision. So, lets move on from the emotions. I asked for recommendations, not criticism. Lets move on.

But for those prices. . .these look more like toys than the Ubnt stuff, imo
Maybe he wants something like these:

I was going to say the same. . . lol
I think he wants something like these:
https://www.axis.com/en-us/products/axis-q16-seriesAnd I bet these work about as well as the options already discussed, but cost way more and have less features.
This topic feels like one about ESXi Free vs Everything else. .

I have not mentioned price and I want to keep it that way. Can't be wireless. They will be too far apart.

I'm not criticizing you, I'm criticizing the moron you report to.
Tell him you have more installation options with the Ubiquiti gear, it's easy to setup and maintain and expand. And it won't cost
you athe business fortune with the number of devices you need.
