Typical Tech Problems
Tintri in some ways emulates the problems which far too many tech IPOs possess. Its revenue has ballooned in the past few years according to its SEC filing, going from almost $50 million in the fiscal year ending January 2015 to over $125 million in the same period ending January 2017. And Tintri claims that since it projects the storage hardware market could reach over $27 billion in 2018, it has plenty of growth potential.
But while Tintri can claim that its revenue growth shows its potential, the rest of its numbers are extremely concerning. Tintri lost over $105 million in 2017 compared to a net loss of $69 million in 2015. By comparison, Tintri claims to have $49 million in cash and $97 million in total assets as of April 30, 2017. We are looking at a company with ever increasing losses that will need to turn things around extremely quickly, as it cannot afford losses of this magnitude given its cash on hand and amount raised in the IPO.

This stuff worries me significantly in storage vendors. You pay for black box with support and are 100% dependent on the company being around, viable and there to help you. You have to trust the company's as a vendor and you have to trust them financially. You gamble on closed solutions like these that the vendor will still be around to support you for the duration of your support contract. If the companies have bad financial pictures, especially these that run at a loss hoping to be acquired or gambling on big growth that has almost no possibility of happening, the end users are the ones at risk. Of course you gamble like this with EMC or Microsoft - but those are companies with billions in profits and long histories of stability. That's a safe bet. A very safe bet. But Nutanix? That's a vendor that could close its doors any day. It's just bleeding cash, has no hope of investment, little hope of acquisition and every day is just another day for the existing shareholders to lose value. Whether you like the vendor or their products or not, these kinds of companies are really scary to use in a position where you need to depend on the vendor to be around for any length of time.

Nutanix? It's everywhere. Have you not looked at their financials? They lose money on every sale, they are too big for a funding round. Nutanix being non-viable has been standard industry assessment for some time.

Hopefully, before they shut the doors maybe they'll "open source" their KVM + HTML5 GUI !

Seems unlikely. Their culture is not at all like that. I suspect they'd rather see their code burn and be lost rather than letting anyone get access to it.

Does Nutanix really have some tech of real interest?

They were able to create a HTML5 GUI for KVM.
Not sure why no one else has one!
You'd think RedHat would have a similar GUI for KVM. -

@scale doesn't count since it's closed source. -

I think we really just need a coder who has some spare time. Not sure I'd be up to the task myself, but it would be an interesting project. Too bad @QuixoticJeremy is already SUPER busy with something else.

They've lost over 500 million dollars, and are not public so they can't raise VC cash.
well over 100 million lost on last quarter.
