Audacity Yes it's free and works for simple 1 file edits but oy, it's a chore to use if you are doing anything bigger than that. Plus quite a few of the plugins leave much to be desired compared with Audition.
Ardour, Mac & Linux only is the only downside I have to it.
I will say that either tool does not replace the synchronization between Premier Pro & Audition that you can use.

@Breffni-Potter never heard of Audition. I only know Audacity. Is Audition a new competitor?

Audition is the Adobe audio editing platform. It has been around for a long time.

I thought Scribus was the leader here. Didn't know that Adobe had a competitor for it. Not surprised but Scribus has a lot of mindshare and I've never heard anyone mention an Adobe product for this use case.
I have family that worked in this space and so I know Quark.

Audition came out originally under the name "SoundBooth" - It was then renamed Audition a few years ago but it's not new.

I've never heard of Scribus until today. How many design houses use it would you say?
How can any design house not know about the Adobe products...that's like finding an IT admin who has never heard of MS office, it's just out there.

I have family that worked in this space and so I know Quark.
The last place I worked use Publisher for everything. One of the techs for a big newspaper publisher I know says they use Adobe products almost exclusively. Not saying that is the norm just my experience.

I'm sure design houses know of lots of options, that doesn't make those options the leader. If a design house doesn't know Scribus it would be like not knowing Linux. Sure everyone knows Windows too, but Linux is in broader use. Scribus, I get the impression, is like Linux here. More broadly used, even if not quite as broadly known. But I was just saying that Scribus I hear about regularly and have for over a decade. Adobe equivalent... I never heard about. A design house would. But I hear about Quark too, but not Adobe in this role.

I've been using Audacity for forever. Using it a lot since 2005, or so.
