RE: Installing Ansible 2 on CentOS 7
@scottalanmiller This would more than likely be a result of someone coming into a DevOps role from the perspective of a Developer, versus that of a person who has worked the Systems/Infrastructure side of things. I wonder how soon something like this will switch the current demand from that of developers/programmers/coders to that of systems/infrastructure specialists.
DevOps, from this perspective, makes me kind of anxious. Having the expectation that everyone share the load across the board (infrastructure, development, testing, etc...) creates an odd simile in my mind likened to the overly engineered coffee maker that grinds your coffee, brews a couple shots of espresso, steams your milk, and combines everything into a cup. In many ways an overly complex costly appliance that is rendered useless if one single component fails; not to mention costly to repair. I prefer having a separate tools that are engineered to perform their task well and are easy to maintain. I don't want a cable modem with a built in router, switch, and wireless access point.
In reference to the DevOps trend, I can see how having a very competent team is advantageous for startups. As the trend continues to grow aren't we going to hit a wall or cap on talent acquisition? How many people can ADEQUATELY fill those roles? Or is it acceptable to have a team composed of a few infrastructure-heavy members, and a few dev-heavy members and expect their skillsets to balance out overtime? What happens when demand is so high that the grass is nearly always greener? (if that isn't already the case)

RE: XenServer 6.5 keyboard not working on Dell R900 and R710 during install.
@christophergault I recently purchased a used R710 and was able to install XenServer using a USB keyboard without any issues. I'm using a very basic inexpensive standard keyboard. Maybe try different ports and/or an additional keyboard differing from those you have previously tried?

RE: Xen Orchestra Delta Restore
Very cool, thank you for sharing. I still haven't had enough time to sit down and spin up a XO vm at home yet, but your threads on here have been eating away at me to get it done.

Developer Certifications
As part of the degree program I am currently involved in I'll eventually be gaining the following certifications:
-Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer
-Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 7 ProgrammerIn regards to a career, and possibly making a switch to strictly Software Development, how relevant are certifications when you are considering candidates? Say you had a Java Developer with 1 year of verifiable relevant experience and the above certifications versus another candidate with 3 years verifiable relevant experience and no certifications. Which would be more appealing?
What, if any, other additional desirable certifications exist for software developers?

RE: Pingdom not free anymore
So I got to thinking about this post and decided to use it as motivation to practice with GIT version control. I built a simple website monitoring application/script that exports site status to a very simple HTML page and availability log. The script is meant to be setup using Cron and the availability log can be parsed to track any periods of downtime. If you're interested in giving it a whirl/critique you can clone it from:
https://github.com/ramblingbiped/simple-site-monitor
*written in BASH for use on debian/ubuntu-based linux distributions.
Thanks for the motivation, it was a great exercise for familiarization with GIT!

RE: I am falling in love - with Docker! <3
If you're developing web applications it is great for keeping consistency across the board on dev environments; it's great mitigation for dependency hell.

@anonymous
How many Linux servers do you need?
All of them. You need them all.

RE: Pingdom not free anymore
If you're just looking to monitor whether a site is online you could spin up a very small linux VM, install sendmail, and use BASH to throw together a really simple script that cycles through a list of hosts on a regular interval and fires off an email notifying you when a host is down.

RE: Pingdom not free anymore
@Ambarishrh I use a combination of https://www.monitor.us and local nagios servers. I just implemented a NagiosPI server this weekend on a Raspberry PI2 that I got as a Christmas gift. Super fast to get up and running with Raspberry PI. The image has nconf for managing nagios configurations and NagVIS for building out logical graphical representation of systems you are monitoring.

RE: Sitting for the SY0-401 tomorrow...
So, I decided to stop pretending the test was respiring after the first couple of questions. However, I did keep my underwear on through the entire process and managed to pass!

RE: For the conspiracy theorists
@art_of_shred Oh good grief... Seriously? Carbon free sugar?

RE: Sitting for the SY0-401 tomorrow...
So:
- Remember to wear underwear
- Imagine the test breathing
Got it!

Sitting for the SY0-401 tomorrow...
Any suggestions or words of wisdom from those who have taken it?

Sure, why not... We'll just ad a handful of that fancy copper thread stuff that magically makes arthritis disappear. Then we can have a tertiary marketing strategy to treat lock jaw and arthritis of the skull's sutures.

RE: For the conspiracy theorists
@Nic So maybe we should all start a kickstarter for special hats that help treat Munchausen syndrome?

RE: For the conspiracy theorists
As hilariously awful as this is I can totally see myself buying some of these for a few extra special people.
