Large gathering - I can't imagine a world where they simply don't exist.
We might have to. Or it might be nothing. We've been through this many times with humanity. But now, for the first time more or less, we understand how to put a death toll on those decisions. So unlike previous times, we understand that we are literally deciding to kill people by having these things. So unlike before where we didn't know any different, now we have to decide, as a species, how many deaths are we willing to have to enjoy large gatherings, and of which types.
Well Hollywood and their followers keep telling us we have world population, food shortage, and climate change problems. Large gatherings with a side of survival of the fittest is a simple solution, no? Maybe not the right solution but it is one.
If the system was a little more self selecting and a little less "selected by others", I'd be happier with it. Sadly it's rarely the people going to the events that die off, but rather the more fragile that they then come in contact with.

Entire Texas Medical Center system, not just the flagship facility, is now beyond capacity.
No car accidents allowed. No births. No construction as there will be a slip/fall.
If you don't think that wearing a mask would've helped, or that science is "questionable," then I kindly invite you to STFU. The celebration of idiocy, the politicization of a virus, and the sheer refutation of facts by anyone who believes that 120,000+ dead people aren't real is more than rude, more than infuriating and just plain dangerous. It borders on holocaust denier, and I fucking hate those people.
There are families who are now just one or two people left. Imagine that your family reunion went from 150 people to 15, and you couldn't attend any of the funerals. You have to mourn alone. Covid doesn't fucking care if you wear a red hat, a blue hat, pray to an invisible being in the sky, or worship a spaghetti monster. It's a fucking virus. It will not only do what it does, which is pretty fucking bad, but it'll find other shit to trigger and help it kill you. Got diabetes? Got leukemia? Asthma? Heart condition? Smoker? Anything that you didn't know about, it will find. It will do it's best to kill you. And the politicians want to downplay it. Don't listen to them. Don't listen to me! Listen to the scientists, the mathematicians and the doctors that are dealing with this. They will tell you why this needs to be taken far more seriously than the US leaders are.
@Dashrender I hope no one in your family or circle gets sick or dies. Many people out there will not understand the severity of this issue until anyone near them is dead, and when you figure out that this is preventable, that leadership failed for months, that Dear Leader continues to shift blame and not assert any kind of direction, but your friend is still dead, imagine what you'll think then? Will you attend the funeral through Zoom or FaceTime?
We give people shit all the time for not knowing how to right click, read what the error message was before clicking ok, or shutting a PC off when it's doing updates and says not to do that. Right now, our doctors, the CDC, the WHO and everyone out there in a scientific job -- the SysAdmins for biology --, are telling us to stay home, to wear masks, to wash your hands, to not gather indoors, and people are doing it. They're probably the same people that can't right click. Listen to the SysAdmins.

There is talk of shipping sick people across the state to Dallas because we are the last large city with any capacity. So of course, our infection rate will skyrocket once infected people are being shipped here.
Not that I want to turn them away, just... this really sucks.

I'm not looking for anyone to die either - at the same time - how long are you willing to lock down? If you're a person who works for a living at a restaurant/movie theater/amusement park and are basically now unemployed - what is your proposal?
I'm more or less OK with wearing masks for a while, I don't know about indefinitely.
As for attending a funeral - I've missed several already - I almost missed my own mothers (like that was ever going to happen in reality). But we did have a zoom funeral for my mother for those who couldn't attend.

I'm going to whole-heartedly agree with this. My school has decided to send everyone back to working on campus full time in two weeks. I went and told my vp my concerns about this and that I thought it was a huge mistake. I got berated for the next hour:45 min that I can't see what is important and then she went on to other things including how to do my job, why she is upset at me and several other things that I triggered because I said my thoughts( politely also).

You realize that when there was a stay-at-home order, the numbers peaked and then dropped. Now that everyone is tired of it, you want to get out and ignore it, like watching an episode of the apprentice where you're bored after 20 seconds.
Oh, Essential workers? During the stay at home orders, essential workers finally learned they were essential. If they really were all along, they needed things like healthcare, a living wage, and respect from the Karens of the world who just want to talk to managers. So, if they're essential, treat them as such. Put them on Tricare, medicare, or use the ACA to give them free, state-based healthcare. MAGAs will argue, "but that's socialism!" and so is the social security retirement program, which is now seen as an entitlement. It has social in the title, ffs. Further, if people were paid appropriately, then unemployment wouldn't be as impactful. Allowing people to get out of the "living paycheck to paycheck" rut grants them the opportunity to save and -- hold your shit here -- spend more, as well as buy houses, invest in their retirement, and --oh shit-- make the economy stronger. Plus, an unemployment insurance payout would be higher (OMG another social program).
What the fuck has this president done? Cut healthcare, create a trade war (increasing prices for consumers), institute and strengthen immigration concentration camps, ignore a pandemic, failed to lead, and on, and on. The 'me first' attitude, which you are also representing, is why this country is failing.
I'm sorry you've lost people. I really am. I apologize for the assumption that you were insulated. Many people are, and they exhibit the same attitudes.
Lockdown needs to go on, needs to be observed, and it needs enforcement until the infrastructure can support reopening. Right now, Texas is overwhelmed. How long until Florida is? What happens when people are shunted to other locations? Look at how Italy handled the virus and you'll see that it's entirely possible to survive with a stay-at-home order. More will die without it.
As to masks, here's a doctor. Don't listen to me!
https://twitter.com/marklewismd/status/1275953520248668160Let me fucking close this non-starter of a discussion that I'm tired of reading about by saying: WEAR YOUR FUCKING MASK. It is literally making America an embarrassment to the world.

Coronavirus: US hits record high in daily cases
The United States recorded an all-time daily high of 40,000 coronavirus infections on Thursday, figures from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) show.
A recent surge in infections and hospitalisations has prompted the states of Texas, Florida and Arizona to pause reopening plans. Texas's governor ordered bars to close and announced other "targeted measures" on Friday to bring infections down. Florida announced it was suspending alcohol consumption at its bars. JHU's previous high of 36,400 was on 24 April when less testing took place. The US has 2.4 million confirmed infections and 122,370 deaths - more than any other country. While some of the increase in daily cases recorded is down to increased testing, the rate of positive tests in some areas is also increasing. -
10+ day incubation is the real problem
Americans are too fucking stupid to do math.

It's like Europeans coming to the Americas. They had absolutely no idea that their diseases would spread like crazy and kill most people.
I read somewhere that once they learned of this, they used it as a weapon and purposely infected the natives.

Also, I am sure that the ridiculous amount of testing going on is highly contributing to the increased number of cases. I have seen so many videos of many hundreds of people gathered closely together waiting in line to be tested. Surely if they all weren't infected when they arrived, the sure went home infected.

Are you fucking stupid?
People stating the increased testing is why there is increased cases are intentionally ignoring reality.
I have always hated the blanket case number reporting, because that honestly doesn't matter.
What matters is positivity rate over time of those tests and availability of hospital beds.

Certainly not as fucking stupid as your stupid fucking ass.
How the hell can you sit there and tell me a large gathering of hundreds or more of people and one after another nobody wearing gloves or masks aren't contributing to the spread?
Like in this example:

I didn’t quote and comment on that did I?

Agreed - neither of which did I ever hear any reporting about until the second half of last week - and it was only the availability of beds, not the rate over time - just reporting pure numbers.
So the media is still cherry picking what to report to get the most clicks.
Now do I believe the infection rate is going up? of course I do, people are people - as lock down lifts, people want to get back to normal - and infection rates will and have risen.

Coronavirus: EU to allow in visitors from 14 'safe' countries
The EU has named 14 countries whose citizens are deemed "safe" to be let in from 1 July, despite the pandemic - but the US, Brazil and China are excluded.
Those named include Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco and South Korea. The EU is ready to add China if the Chinese government offers a reciprocal deal for EU travellers, diplomats say. EU border controls have been lifted for EU citizens travelling inside the bloc. Rules for UK travellers are covered separately in the Brexit negotiations. UK nationals are still to be treated in the same way as EU citizens until the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December. Therefore, during that time UK nationals and their family members are exempt from the temporary travel restriction. On the current "safe" list, still likely to be amended, are Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay. -
Coronavirus: US officials warn 'this is just the beginning'
Health officials across the US have expressed growing concern about the nation's ability and willingness to slow or end the coronavirus pandemic.
A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expert said on Monday the US has "way too much virus" to control. It comes as top US disease expert Anthony Fauci, who is due to testify to Congress, says an "alarmingly large" number of Americans are "anti-science". Many US states have paused reopenings as their infection caseloads balloon. On Tuesday, cases rose by more than 40,000 in one day for the fourth time in the past five days. The surge - which is occurring particularly strongly in southern and western states - has forced at least 16 states to pause or reverse their reopening plans, according to CNN. For some the new measures come over a month after they first began to reopen their economies.
