Support Engineer
-
GroveSocial is excited to introduce our recruitment division and would like to announce a job opportunity with one of our clients. As we are doing the recruitment, the first part of the vetting process will be with GroveSocial/Danielle and not the client themselves.
The Client is a new software-defined storage application that pools the unused hard disk capacity in a single-office network to create a new virtual drive. We are a fast-growing start-up based in the heart of Manhattan, and will be launching in January 2015.
We are currently looking for an entry level developer to join our team. Initially, this role will be divided between Support and Development, with much potential for growth as we expand. The ideal candidate will have a strong theoretical and practical background in Computer Science. They also need to be comfortable speaking with and providing support to our customers, highly technical Network Administrators.
This is not a basic Tech Support role. The Support Engineer is the most external-facing member of our Development Team. They will have to diagnose and solve real problems for our customers.
TASKS
- Process support tickets and engage with customers to diagnose problems
- Implement solutions in code base when required
- Develop and expand programmatic tests for solved issues
- Contribute to day-to-day development operations
REQUIRED
- B.S. in Computer Science
- Experienced with Java
- Knowledge of layer-2 networks, firewalls and NATs
- Comfortable speaking directly with technical customers
- Able to communicate clearly and professionally in writing
PREFERRED
- Experience in a customer facing role
- IT administration experience
- Tech support experience
- Software engineering experience

Ok, dang. I hate dev work at the coding level. I'm more of a developer when it comes to the concepts and planning level.

A B.S. or equivalent experience is also needed.

I removed my comments, hadn't realized that there were two threads.

I'm not interested in this job, but what qualifies as equivalent experience to a B.S.? 4+ years on the job?

Normally far less, but has to be real work in the right field. They was a four year CS degree, not IT or software engineering. I'm sure a four year software engineering job would be looked on fairly favourably, but CS is its own thing and they are not using the term incorrectly here. This is one of those rare jobs that actually wants a CS grad and not those fake CS programs that so many schools do these days. Actual CS.
With development, one of the best "alternatives" to a degree or lots of experience is a portfolio. Unlike IT, you can actually make one for yourself in software development.

The client is looking for someone with 5+ years experience with a great portfolio.
This client has many European educated members to their team and as such the educational items mean much different things than they do here in the US.

In the US, it is common for a four year software engineering graduate to not even be able to write code. There are literally programs in SE and even CS that outright lie about what their program is and just teach extremely basic IT instead of software development.

Interested... I meet all of the qualifications, however it's been a while since I steadily did anything in Java. I am not afraid of brushing up my skills though.
