Macbook Pro unable to refresh OS
-
So we have these two Macbook Pros that were purchased by a manager (a bit of shadow IT as it wasn't really approved through us) that are basically paperweights right now. The manager registered the two Macbooks with their personal AppleID. Unfortuantely(?) the manager has since moved on and the department is requesting access to these laptops. They don't really care about anything on them.
So... any Mac experts know a way to refresh these laptops without the registered AppleID?
I've tried to use command+r and a corporate AppleID to refresh the operating system but I get a "This item is temporarily unavailable" error. Apparently the account isn't entitled to the version of OSX that is installed by default (Mavericks).

You won't be able to remove the AppleID without the credentials. You can take them to apple and show proof of purchase and they can help you with it.
But outside of that you have no other options.

Pop in a Fedora 26 or Windows 10 DVD, problem solved. Lots and lots of shops run Windows and Linux on Mac hardware.

I was actually thinking that was the best way forward.

I bet 20% of Macs sold to business end up this way. I know so many shops that are 100% Mac hardware, 0% MacOS.

And by so many, I mean a few. But I know some, and I know zero that use Mac hardware and all run MacOS. Thirty years of consulting, seen many of the former and zero of the latter.

I was under the assumption you wanted to use Mac OSx, hence the post.

I don't want to use OSx... I just wanted to see if there was a fast way to just refresh the OS.

Start with Fedora since you dont have Windows licenses for those. With Cinnamon, just tell them it is Windows 11 Preview.

Fedora has problems with power settings on Max hardware

We have a doc that demanded a Mac laptop, even knowing that he will have to have windows to access some remote access stuff. /sigh

Install Win 10 on it. Will run great

Does Windows 10 automatically detects all drivers or we still need the boot camp drivers?

No boot camp needed
