Best of luck, if you pull this off, you will be your own boss.
Thanks. My only concern is I will be trading a much shorter commute for more working hours. Will I even see my kids during the week besides when they are already in bed?
Working from home has been great - yet not. during the summer we have had a sitter for the kids, most days they get out and do things. bad weather they stay in,.. and here lately as we end out the summer - they are going less and watching videos. This week is odd since we have a temp sitter while the other is doing training for classes. School starts next week.
When Ison was sick in November of 2017, it was great to still work, but take care of him here at home - and then the two weeks he was in the hospital..my working vacation.
While down time is few some days, I take the time to grab then and hug them, fix them lunch, tickle them and talk to them... so it's been a win.
Next week I'll be so thrilled to have to go back to school... but I will be extremely disappointed at the same time.
With all things, there are Pros and Cons...
November of 2017
You're from the future????

Start with 1 job.
Offering internet service.
Leave everything else out of it.
That's the plan. Instead of becoming a "jack of all trades", I'll become a "master of one". Let others that have mastered other fields become consultants and divvy out work as it comes up.
So you want to be a services broker along with an ISP.
Seems like you're fracturing your time already.
Not at all. Say I have a business customer approach me about needing a web presence. I know it exists, but me setting it up for them, proxying, designing, etc, would be beyond my skillset. Therefore, I would ask somebody like @Dominica / @scottalanmiller (just an example) to work with me on that project. They would talk to the customer and provide them with what they need, then they would bill me, which I would forward to the customer.

So again, you want to be a broker of services and an ISP provider.
The ISP would be one service, mainly aimed at residential. Businesses would go under a consulting name, where ISP is only one of several services that I could offer them. But the primary and only business at first would be the ISP.

So then why discuss anything other than what you need to do your desired first business? Why the hell are you bringing up a conversation of "oohh I might be a broker of services for website dev etc".
FFS focus on getting the 1 thing setup and stable and profitable before you start fracturing out and doing other shit.

I think we've being saying the same thing, just 2 different ways. Sorry.

What hardware would you need to begin as an ISP, do you have the planned out?

@nerdydad said in I am going to start an ISP:
ALL of it.
Ubiquiti R5AC-Prism airMax and Ubiquiti AM-5G20-90 5GHz AirMax Sector Antenna for broadcasting from the tower
Ubiquiti LBE-5AC-Gen2-US for CPE
Ubiquiti EP-R8 EDGEPOINT ROUTER on the tower connecting to the Transceivers by 1Gb copper (thats all that the transceivers will take) and SFP down to the office.
Ubiquiti ERPRO-8 Advanced Network Routers to connect to my ISP source (with agreement for resale, of course).Vultr will host the uCRM, UNMS, FreePBX (internally to company only), and email (again, internal to company only).

I'd guess price, and point to multipoint wireless isn't going to be needing 10gbps.

That's an ambitious task, I like it and I want you to go kick this thing's ass.

But for backbone and growth capabilities I think it would be worth it.
If he's servicing say 100 people the Pro would quickly begin to struggle.

When @NerdyDad actually needs a backbone, yes. He's just starting out, so he really doesn't need anything like that at this point.

Not to parrot @scottalanmiller but why would he buy something for a future that may never happen?
-
I would guess you have an opportunity to mount on a building or tower for free since leasing space from a tower owner and engineers/permit fees haven't been brought up?
Will be interested to see how you fair with UBNT.
What city/zip/are is this in?

Looks like the Infinity is still under some more development before it is ready for prime time.

Nobody has them yet, looks like the price point is at about $1500, and this thing is a little bit overkill for the moment.
