XenServer - RAID - Home Lab

Should I use the motherboard RAID? I have 4 drives, so I can do RAID 10.
-
No, motherboard RAID is just a thinly veiled codename for FakeRAID. If you want to use software RAID, always use legit enterprise software RAID. It is free with every OS.
-
With XenServer you actually have the option for seriously enterprise software RAID with the Linux MD RAID system. The motherboard RAID likely won't even work as you'd have to figure out how to get consumer Windows RAID drivers into XenServer. And then keep them stable.
MD RAID is excellent and built into XenServer (even though they do not expose it.)

Does anyone make a cheap raid card?
-
Software RAID is acceptable, if properly implemented.
A cheap RAID Controller is like asking for the cheap airbag on a payer of keeping you alive in a car wreck. I'd rather have the expensive one that is heavily tested and extensively designed.

No. Real hardware RAID is not cheap. $600 is a general starting point. Anything less and you are getting garbage. Or worse, FakeRAID.

Inexpensive raid card no. Inexpensive HBA card, yes.
