    • RE: Looking into IP cameras

We installed a 10 camera Vitek system at our office back in September and it has worked well so far. Cameras record up to 4k. Has a dedicated NVR which has a built-in switch with POE. 10 cameras + 16channel NVR = $3k-4k

The security company who installed it recommended Vitek from their experiences with them. Had never heard of them beforehand.

    • RE: VMWare Shutdown

To manually accomplish this, you'll need to shut down each VM guest on the host. Once they're all safely shut down, put the host in Maintenance Mode and then proceed to shutdown. If you're just rebooting it, it won't take but a minute or two. Then when it boots back up, bring the host out of Maintenance Mode and power all your VM's back up.

Now you tagged vCenter Server but you mentioned hosts. Just beware that if/when you shut down your vCenter VM (appliance or Windows based VM) you'll obviously lose access to the web console to proceed further. You'll need to login to the web client for the individual hosts or use the old Windows based vSphere client (if you're running ESXi 6.0 or older).

    • Office365 on Android - Certificate Error

User just came into my office showing the following. When trying to sync his work email (Office 365) he's getting a message that there's an invalid certificate and would he like to Cancel - View - Continue. When we view it, we see the following image.

      • This is on a Samsung Galaxy S9 fully updated.
      • We do not use Fortinet anywhere in our network.
      • This occurs over Wifi connection or mobile data.
      • He currently isn't using any VPN app or otherwise which would re-direct traffic.

Honestly not sure what to make of this.

Also, will they require hardware upgrades if they choose any on-premises option that will add to the project costs?

No. Their current on site hardware can handle it. That hardware will likely see an upgrade in 2020 or 2021.

Even being a year or two down the road, that's extra hardware you know you wouldn't otherwise need if hosted therefore a portion of the hardware upgrade costs should be allocated today in my opinion.

you have no intention of maintaining this system outside of backups etc, therefore they have someone already who is skilled enough to do so?

No, we are their outsourced IT department, we will handle it. But when planning, I never plan for us to continue to do so. I obviously hope they continue to have us do so, but I never plan on it.

I think here it's in the best interest of the company then to have some form of hosted solution that's easier to have someone else step into and manage in a scenario where your relationship ended. If I were a key decision maker at the company, no matter how much I liked you and we'd been in business together, that's a risk factor I'd have to consider.

Just curious, if Zoho + spam/malware filtering seemed to check all the boxes at $3/user/mo, would you immediately go Zoho vs EOP1 simply based on cost? Is cost the ultimate factor?

    • RE: AMD Vs Intel

@travisdh1 said in AMD Vs Intel:

First of all, Ryzen 3 is the upcoming CPU line from AMD. If you're supplier has access to those for less than an i5, probably a steal at this point as they're not generally available yet.

Ryzen 3 has been available since AMD introduced the series. Don't get that confused with what generation they're on. There's Ryzen 3, 5, and 7 which are supposed to be comparable to Intel's line of i3, i5, and i7.

Yes you likely would save on Ryzen 3 vs i5, because they're not directly comparable products. A more fair comparison would be Ryzen 5 vs i5 or Ryzen 3 vs i3. I would think you'd still see some savings, but maybe not quite as significant.

As others have stated, it comes down to your performance needs. Both are solid platforms.

Did you actually read the entire thing? Anytime Scott goes on those 8 post rants where he's writing a paragraph to every 4 words, I have to just skip those. Kudos to anyone who survived the whole thing.

That pretty much sums it up. I was literally going to order a Huawei watch this week because I thought that the price and look was amazing. But no, that seems like a bad idea now (if they figure things out, I'll totally buy one to support them later.) Right now I need one this week to wear to Europe (smart watches are an important part of effective travel.) I want something attractive and very functional.

The Samsung is nice, but too pricey. I'm thinking $150 - $200. This is a utilitarian travel device not a fancy watch. Right now from quick research, I'm seeing a lot of love for Fossil and Amazfit. Anyone have experience or thoughts?

      I have this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NC8PMUK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I didn't even realize Lenovo made watches. Not surprised, they are quite big.

That link goes to a Motorola Moto for me. What are you seeing?

      https://www.google.com/search?q=does+lenovo+own+motorola&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS819US819&oq=does+lenovo+own+&aqs=chrome.0.0j69i57j0l4.2887j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

      ok?
So google sold motorola to Lenovo..
      What's so bad about that?

Search on ML for Lenovo. Literally the most evil company in the tech industry.

I mean I know they've done some shady things but....

      https://media.giphy.com/media/h4Z6RfuQycdiM/giphy.gif

For someone else to gain BIOS access, all they need to do is be within wifi range when you reboot. That's for starters.

My point is that there's a lot of evil likely going down in tech companies far beyond what Lenovo has done. That's not to minimize Lenovo, just saying it feels like a bit of hyperbole.

    • RE: Moving from O365 E3 to Business Premium

Your Office version will change from ProPlus to Business. Not much difference for most people. It should be painless enough to reinstall using their deployment tool.

      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/overview-of-the-office-2016-deployment-tool

      • Our on premise exchange would not be accessible from the outlook clients anymore since the business premium is only cloud based

I've only used Business Premium and don't have local Exchange, but I'm not sure why this would be true. It doesn't make sense so I would verify.

      • we have some internal services that rely on our on premise exchange server to send some automated email (ie. Veeam Backup Notifications), would them be influenced by these changes?
      • we have some distribution group configured on the on premise exchange, would them be influenced by these changes?

Maybe during the transition from E3 to BP, but otherwise no shouldn't have any effect.

      • Some users don't work on their local machine, they instead RPD to a way more powerful Hyper-V VM (one VM for each user), will this still work with Business Premium licenses?

Yes, Business Premium now allows shared licensing... https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-365-Business-Blog/Shared-Computer-Activation-for-Office-in-Microsoft-365-Business/ba-p/472994

@wirestyle22 said in How to authenticate via AD to non-domain server:

@zachary715 that may not be a graceful upgrade. I haven't compared. I know a lot changed with 18.04. I'd be willing to do it but it's dependent on whether or not my vxrail servers explode again or not. Nothing like multiple millions of dollars worth of hardware having issues to keep you up at night

Haha no worries then. I'm going to install it on 16.04 and see if it works. If it does, then I'll upgrade to 18.04 and see what happens.

    • RE: RAID5 SSD Performance Expectations

Quick update, I modified Server 2 with the SSDs RAID cache policy from Write Through to Write Back, and No Read Ahead to Read Ahead. This appears to have made a drastic improvement as 55GB Windows VM live vMotions to Server 2 are now being completed in about 1 1/2 minutes vs 4 minutes previously, and the network monitor is showing performance on par with what I was seeing on Server 3. Now on to getting all 3 servers in direct connect mode for vMotion and backups over 10Gb/s. Thanks.
