@ccwtech said in Windows Server 2016 NIC Teaming - No internet:

I have a server 2016 machine that when I enable NIC teaming (Switch independent) works just fine until I set a static IP on it.

Then it shows the static IP but also assigns it an APIPA address as well for some reason. That is causing issues (obviously) with network connectivity.

In the NIC Teaming area it shows both adapters connected. Both NIC's are not shared with any management adapters (Lights out, DRAC, etc.).

What do you mean by "working fine"? Do you set the IP on the Team or the individual NICs? VLANs involved?

Working fine means it can get to the internet, is seen by other computers on the network, etc.

I set a static IP on the team but not on the NIC's. There is no IPv4 on the NIC's after putting them into a team.

Correct. I assume it works if it gets an IP by DHCP because you said things went south once you set a static address?

@scotth yeah, i'm with you. My thought was to see if they could change the machine IP to 172.whatever to get it the heck out of any kind of possible routing issue.

That's what I would try. Just to be sure.

Is there by any chance "internet sharing" active on the client PC? This effectively turns that PC into a router. Just an idea.

@thwr I don't think it is insane, it is one machine that needs to be connected to 2 different networks, shouldn't be an issue but it is and they are trying to figure out why it isn't working like it should. My stuff about the possible /16 route was just a guess. If the domain added a /16 route the machine would think that 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 should be routed the same but they shouldn't. If the route was /24 it should see them as completely different networks and they should never cross.

It would have been insane if we are actually talking about overlapping ranges, but it doesn't looks like that.

@thwr the corp NIC is 255.255.255.0 so /24 but I am proposing that perhaps the corp network is /16. I don't know what the corp subnet is, you have about all the info I do. I'm trying to help someone that is in over their head on the machine side and going a bit blind. The customer's msp doesn't seem to know what they are talking about. My question is how on earth could traffic from the machine be going over the corp network if the corp subnet really is 255.255.255.0?

Ok, what traffic gets forwarded to the corp net? From some machine behind your client PC?

Oh, wait. Both NICs have /24 subnet masks. Should work, in theory, but it is so far away from anything sane that I wouldn't even think about doing something like that.

Better get a proper configuration before trying to fix an ugly workaround

it has been a while since I have been on the networking train so I just want to confirm a hunch before I make myself look stupid...here's the sitch

Client computer (on metal working machine) has 2 nics. one it uses to communicate with the innerds of the machine and pass commands back and forth and the other is to connect to the coporate network for file sharing and what-not. each works independently but not together. it seems that when both are plugged in the machine commands get routed to the corporate network thus rending the machine useless. they swear that other MFG machines work fine this way. My conclusion was IP addressing.
      Here is the thing,
nic one (machine) is 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0
nic two (corp) is 192.168.1.x subnet 255.255.255.0

What I think may be happening is that the MSP that set up nic 2 for the corp network gave it a /24 subnet when in fact the corporate network is /16 and has some default route for 192.168.x.x addresses? am I wrong or is this pretty much the only thing that makes sense?

The corp net is 192.168.1.0/16 and of the client machines NICs is 192.168.0.0/24?

Gremlins. Don't get bitten. Your corps net network address is 192.168.0.0, so you have overlapping ranges. The client machine will have a very hard time when in needs to transmit packets. Better reconfigure the machine network, if possible.

UEFI needs FAT32, and the standard Win10 .wim file is larger that 4GB so it won't fit correctly. I have found I need to split the wim file. This is a bit old but the script here works for me:
      https://p0w3rsh3ll.wordpress.com/2016/10/30/how-to-create-uefi-bootable-usb-media-to-install-windows-server-2016/
I change the '/FileSize:4096' parameter to '/FileSize:2048' and that seems to work better

It worked with a slightly newer machine minutes ago. So my guess it that the stick and the installer both work perfectly fine. But I will check that too, thanks

I have a handful of Windows 7 machiens not on a domain.

I want to put a new Admin account on them.

The current user accounts have admin rights, which I will remove, I have ScreenConnect installed and running with admin perms. So I can pop a powershell via the ScreenConnect command window easily to do this.

AD? New-ADuser or so. On the road ATM, can check later

I don't know if it is the USB, but have you tried using the DVD instead? I know is backwards but it would be good to test it. Also supported (Not that you cannot try) are below:

Also update to the latest BIOS too:

DVD? No, thanks. A UEFI capable system should be able to boot from USB drives.

But good shot with the firmware update. Will try that tomorrow

A simple HP ink jet all-in-one, with HP Instant Ink works so well for us, and has been for last bunch of years. And we're not very light with the page count, 50-100 pages a month if not more.

Doesn't that make you new-fashioned? Lasers are the old tech. Unless you are talking daisy wheel or dot matrix.

Of course I'm talking dot matrix... why would you use anything else?

      That was my first printer.

My dad used a 9 dot matrix printer approx. 3 decades ago to print his application. Glued fine embossed paper to the endless paper and printed using... erm, Symphony? Star Writer? Good old times.

Well, it's the printer that my boss and his secretary share. The old one (some HP Color LaserJet 20xx) lasted for nearly 10 years and tens of thousands of pages. Just want to do our secretary a favor because right now she has three devices on her desk: Printer, scanner and a fax machine. I think a good MFC will serve her well.

Can't get a Dell Precision T1600 to boot from a USB thumb drive containing Windows 10 setup (created using Media Creation Tool). The stick works fine, installed another machine minutes ago from the same stick.

The machine starts to boot from the stick, but get's stuck at the blue Windows logo. No difference between UEFI and Legacy mode.

      Ideas?

Looks like a showdown between Kyocera Ecosys M5526cdn and Brother MFC-L8690CDW.

      Anyone using one of them?

I don't like Brother printers. At least none of the ones we've got here.
Mrs nadnerB has been looking at MFC's for our house and found Brother doesn't fair so well in the long run, hardware wise.

I despise their "Control Center" software and am not overly impressed with their hardware.

I will state that I'd take one over a Fuji-Xerox.

From what Mrs nadnerB and I have seen in the lower spec space, the Kyocera would be the better of the two.

Brother's have lasted us at work far longer than Xerox and HP printers, both printer and MFC.

As with everything, your mileage may vary. 😉

Hehe, yep. Anyway, I was about to place an order until I saw where the Kyocera stores its toner cartridges: on the right side. Now guess where the right side of the printer will be placed - next to a wall.

Will order an HP 477dn instead. A little plus: You can adjust the display position, so you could use it without getting up from your chair. The printer itself will be placed on a desk.
