I so wish this thread were still open, sounds like a hell of a read. That other place is so out of control with their moderation. Craziness.

It was the most ridiculous virtualization thread ever.

Why do I have to think about that printer developer guru while reading this. You know, the guy who programmed printers. Funny read

      Maybe. Can't remember.

I really hope that Googles Linux replacement for UEFI will change the rules in this perverted game. Free and public reviewed firmware will hopefully stop this and similar insanities some day.

No more "sorry, we can't give you updates because your 3yr old hardware is out if support" or "oh, you want iSCSI boot for whatever reason? Sure, just pay for it!".

Only works if the manufacturers use it.

No, the idea is to build a generic firmware.

And i dont understand the hate really for Lenovo, sure they did spyware crap (everybody does this, some get caught some dont, latest one is from HP keylogging) but you just have to do fresh-install, and I think this spyware crap what allows lenovo to release good spec hardware for cheap in my region, I recall having Lenovo smartphone A6000, and it was filled with crapware but very cheap. Anyway I have never came across scenario where a clean fresh OS didnt behave like clean fresh OS. I have heard with spyware that gets attached in the BIOS flash image but never encountered this yet.
However that said I wish I have OEM that provides their drivers as .inf files, or for them to be as light and least intrusive as possible, especially with laptops, now you have driver and software GUI + service for monitoring the monitor, and for FN keys, and for battery optimization, and for HDD software shock monitoring, if you ask me there all gimmicks, or they need to be better grouped.

      https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150812/11395231925/lenovo-busted-stealthily-installing-crapware-via-bios-fresh-windows-installs.shtml

The (spy|crap|bloat)ware (or a downloader for it) was stored in UEFI. You can reinstall as much as you want in this case.

We have seen ... worse proposals from the EU, like the "Commission Regulation (EEC) No 1677/88 of 15 June 1988 laying down quality standards for cucumbers" as a prominent example.

When you take a look back and know where it comes from (WW1, coal saving, longer firefights, yay...), well, bury it. Even from an IT point of view, the world would be a tiny bit better without it.

    • RE: .local vs .com

@bbigford said in .local vs .com:

I'm not sure if this conversation has been completely talked to death. I'm wanting to get others' perspective on the use of .local vs. .com

.local has been used by a default for Windows Server for quite some time, up to 2012R2 Essentials. Many people prefer to use something like ad.domain.com

There have been a few client acquisitions, and what ends up happening is a company name changes a couple times before the servers are replaced within ~5 years. Rather than changing their domain name, I just create a new DNS suffix instead. Over time, I end up rebuilding the domain not only to clean stuff up, but to have the company name completely updated across the board. It takes a little more time, but it looks better in the end so there is no old hold-over.

I've read quite a bit over the years of people using corp.local ... don't have to worry about company name changes or anything else. But then people have run into issues where they need to have an internal CA since 3rd party certs can't be issued to non resolvable FQDN's.

      Thoughts on consistency?

About com vs local: Many guides today suggest a real domain. The most important reason seems to be that you will be able to get "real" certificates. No chance for certs with invalid TLDs.

Switch independent works pretty good. Also take a look into SET (Switch Embedded Teaming), which moves teaming one layer up. It's basically the next logical step.

Meh, my bad. SET requires Windows Server 2016

Dell, HP, Fujitsu, whatever you prefer.

Have you ever bought Fujitsu? They always seem good by the specs and price.

I had a Fujitsu Lifebook laptop (500 mHz P2)... That little thing was a beast. I'd have no qualms about buying another.

Still have an Lifebook C6565 which still works, expect for the battery. P3 700 😉

Well, true. But Cisco is a kind of standard for networking equipment nowadays and been those for pretty long time already. What would you recommend as an alternative?

Dell, HP, Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, even Netgear. There are dozens of switch and router manufacturers in this space that are on par with Cisco's performance and have the same support system for significantly less price.

Ubiquiti especially, as their $45 router will outperform a Cisco ASA device that start around $3500.

Cisco devices do have their place, but it's one of those things where if you don't know beyond a shadow of doubt that you need a certain Cisco device, you probably don't. Add on the cost difference, and Cisco starts to look silly.

Can i get a model number of that one? I need to take a serious look at this stuff.

I agree with @scottalanmiller, just because it's better than Cisco doesn't make it the right choice. ERL and EdgeRouter 4 are on my short list.

The ER-4 is on my list to get. That thing has some decent specs. A decent upgrade from the ERL from the looks of it.

I'll get one in a few days

Yes, for free. Our DC is going to replace it and they usually give "old" hardware to attached research institutes when there's enough on-site knowledge.
