Why would you stay with a carrier that so badly created an infrastructure that was so easily compromised? I'd think you want to stay with someone that has thought about these measures ahead of time and stays in front of the curve and not be reactionary to it after the fact.

Have to agree here. Voip.ms got exposed for not taking their infrastructure seriously. Profits above customers.

@scottalanmiller While I agree with you, it's hard to say who is ahead of the curve or has the proper security in place until something actually happens. Everyone can say they have the best mitigations in place, but no one really knows until an attack of this size happens.

Voip.ms and others should have woken up after the UK companies were hit a couple weeks ago.

I'd think you want to stay with someone that has thought about these measures ahead of time and stays in front of the curve and not be reactionary to it after the fact. I, like Jared have spoken to the president of Skyetel and I have to tell you - they've built theirs from the ground up with these concerns and considerations in mind. They are very confident that their infrastructure is solid on this and based on the confidential talks I've had with them, I'm pretty confident as well.

While I don't doubt that @Skyetel has built a robust and redundant system, I am sure that VOIP.MS thought their system was secure prior to these events.

Bandwidth was able to be taken down multiple times now. Even though it was not to the extent of VOIP.MS, knocking them down even for just a couple hours a day is a problem of its own.

My concern is anyone really able to defend against this completely?

Soooo where do we go from here?

I ended up staying with VOIP.MS with the mindset that they would put better mitigations in place and this would cool down. Although they poorly communicated with their customers, I feel they did end up getting their service back on track. Now that Bandwidth is being targeted, is this just a sign of what's to come to the other carriers? Assuming this was another DDoS, can this really be fully mitigated?

Already started the port out process.

What does that mean Jared? That you're moving (porting) the numbers to another provider?

Yes. This outage is not the reason, but it did accelerate the timeline.

This was the last client that I active support day to day that used VoIP.ms as their primary provider. It was previously planned to migrate in October after another project was completed.

@JaredBusch - Just curious, were you able to port out or is the request still pending?

I assume since all their IP addresses are publicly posted, they are still getting DDoS directly.

They have always been publicly posted.

Even if not, you cannot hide them.

So no idea wtf you think could be changed.

Agreed. I just mean all the targets were posted in a nice list.

It appears that they are using CloudFlare. I thought that using a service like this would help avoid / mitigate such problems.

According to posts on their Twitter, it looks like they switched over to CloudFlare after the fact.

I found them on Twitter their service provider is being attacked right now. It appears that they only have one DNS host. Sigh

They posted the IP of the servers for you to change things.
      https://twitter.com/voipms/status/1438543881491132424

Some clients the direct IP is working sporadically and others it's a no go.

Tried from D drive got this error

make sure you spelled everything correctly.

you're pictures are to small for my horrible eyesight to read.

      Tried this
      .\setup.exe /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms

Your posted instructions say to run Command Prompt as Administrator. It looks like you are using PowerShell. Not sure if that matters but maybe give that a try.

I find ATA's a hit and miss also. Then retransmissions start and the client likes to restart from page 1.

      Try @Skyetel fax solution.

@JaredBusch any recommended ATA's that you use? I have used the Cisco SPA112 and one of the Grandstreams (can't remember the model number).

@pmoncho @Dashrender We are in the same boat with fax and alarm systems; in addition to having to support legacy PBX systems that can only be managed by dial-up. Several of our POTS have been moved to fiber delivered "voip" and off the carrier's copper plants but we have a few holdout ones that we have to pursue alternatives.

Like I just mentioned to @pmoncho you could look into SIP carrier like @Skyetel and ATA's to provide analog dialtone.

I've tried ATA's for faxing with sip providers in the past and they are just too hit or miss. Some faxes go through no problem and others just don't work. We also tried with our alarm company at one time and they just couldn't get the signal to come through properly during their tests. I can't speak for how @Skyetel works as I've only tried through VOIP.MS. @Dashrender have you had success with them?

anyone else heard of this EOL on copper pair?

Not that I have any - everything I have is Cox - analog over cable.

A client of mine was told something similar from AT&T. They were basically trying to upsell them on fiber and voip service. We are no longer using AT&T.

As many of you know, I have a new hotel and restaurant. Right now we have an existing POS system and we do not like it. We are nearing the point where we have the option to replace it. So we are looking for recommendations. We are not tied to only considering free or open source options, but obviously those have some advantages - especially considering that we have the IT skills in house to run something ourselves. But we are open to ideas of whatever makes the most sense.

I don’t have any experience with the product, but Zoho has a restaurant and hotel management option. I know you are a fan of some of their other products. Maybe this would be a good fit?
